Dear Students and Colleagues, 

I will organize an introductory course on Galois theory (5 cp, poster attached) in the second period of the autumn term. The course is a natural continuation for the present Algebra 1 course. 

Galois theory studies number field extensions and provides a bridge between field theory and group theory. All students and staff members with a background in basic algebraic structures are warmly welcome! 

Schedule: 6.11.-14.12.2012, first lecture 6.11. (2nd week of II period) at 15:15 in U510.

The course will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 15:15 and on Fridays at 10:15 in U510. The times are somewhat unusual in order to better enable attendance from the University of Helsinki as well. There will be no exam. Instead, the grading is based on written exercises. The contact hours will be 50% lectures and 50% exercises. Related topics for master's/diploma theses will be announced during the course.
