to Alice Austen Board of Directors
Dear friends and family,
Please forgive me the group e-mail, but I am blessed to have so many friends and family members that it would not be possible to contact you all individually. I hope that you will help me to spread the word as well, especially in the other parishes, the Interparish Council, the Council of Churches, and Alice Austen House.
As many of you know, I have had a long and complex medical history, which has not been an issue professionally until the last couple of years. It has gotten to the point at which I find it is very difficult to reliably perform my duties, and the church pension plan is now providing me a medical disability retirement pension. This was made effective March 1, 2016, so I am now officially retired from my position as Rector of Church of the Ascension.
Although I first arrived in New York City in 2000, and have lived here permanently since 2005, I feel that it makes the most sense for me to return to the Seattle area, where I grew up, to be close to my immediate and extended family and many long-term friends. I must say that it is not easy to leave this area, with so many valued friends and colleagues, but the medical care available in Seattle is far superior to that of the part of New York City in which I live, and I think it would be a good idea to connect with that as well. I expect to leave New York City around April 10th.
For those of you in my area, I've attached an invitation I've been asked to forward on, inviting you to a going-away luncheon on Saturday, April 9th.
Please do not worry about the gift, as I believe that is mostly for parishioners. The most important thing would be for you to come and be with us! I have been in my positon nearly 6 years so it will be a good time for us to spend some time together prior to my departure for Seattle.
The women of the parish love to host beautiful luncheons and receptions, so please be sure to RSVP as requested in the invitation so they can be prepared.
I look forward to seeing you here, or in the Seattle area in the near future.
Richard
