Dear Friends and Supporters of the Douglaston/Little Neck Community Library,

Please see the attached official flyer.  This event is sponsored by you, the Friends of the Douglaston/Little Neck Community Library, in conjunction with the Douglaston and Little Neck Historical Society....many thanks to you all!

Please join us for the screening and discussion of the acclaimed documentary Alice's World, hosted by its directorStuart Hersh, on Thursday, January 8th at 6:00 pm at the Douglaston/Little Neck Community Library (249-01 Northern Boulevard, Little Neck, NY 11363, 718-225-8414).

I do hope that you can attend.  Stuart Hersh is a gifted filmmaker and long-time Douglaston/Little Neck resident.  His acclaimed documentary is about the life and legacy of Alice Austen (1866-1952), one of the earliest and most prolific American female photographers, whose quality of work rivaled that of her predominantly male contemporaries. Narrated by Broadway theater icon and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Hayes, the documentary highlights how, starting in 1884, Austen's nearly 8,000 photographs documented the daily life of New Yorkers, from Staten Island's upper middle-class to the poor of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Born and raised in Victorian gentility, Austen died in virtual poverty at age 87; however, the TV airing of this documentary helped save Austen's Staten Island home “Clear Comfort”, now the Alice Austen House Museum, a National Historic Landmark. And:

For this event, we Friends are very happy to partner with the Douglaston and Little Neck Historical Society (DLNHS), of which Stuart serves as a Vice President.  Many thanks to Stuart, DLNHS President Bob Coddington, and Executive Committee members Tom and Alice Fucigna for all of their invaluable help, as well as to the entire DLNHS membership for preserving and keeping our community's past and present alive.  Finally:

There will also be light refreshments served.

Let's give Stuart a rousing welcome, and enjoy the Library we all love!

Happy Holidays!

Arline
