What is this email?

The Energy and Environment Specialty Group sends out a digest email every two weeks with events or opportunities we think might be of interest to the specialty group. This email is not meant to be an exhaustive list or to replace regular messaging on the EESG listserv, but as a way to compile information and resources together in one place.

Thank you!

feel free to share this call for abstract (deadline 15 of May - new date)

Apologies for cross posting

Call for abstract for session 77: "Urban Geographies: The Role of Energy"
Italian Geography Congress  - Italy (Turin) 3-5 September 2025
Amidst the profound transformations currently underway, energy emerges as a key determinant in the causal cycle, the effects, and the potential solutions to many of today’s interconnected crises. Energy choices play a crucial role in urban planning and transformation, influencing building energy efficiency, logistics and mobility organization, energy production methods, the competitiveness of economic activities, market mechanisms, and the active engagement of citizens.
Inherently intertwined with urban issues, digital transformations, and geopolitical shifts, the geography of energy offers a critical lens through which to analyze energy resources within the complex dichotomy of renewable and non-renewable sources, as well as their territorial and scalar dimensions. This field encompasses the study of technological and market solutions, the logistical and geopolitical complexities of supply chains, and goes beyond the techno-economic paradigm by including concerns of justice, energy poverty, and socio-ecological perspectives.
Much like the urban dimension itself, energy serves both as a metaphor and an analytical tool to explore contemporary spatialities, marked by conflict, environmental impact, technological progress, and both aspirational and real changes in behavior and urban planning practices.
Using the framework of the United Nations’ 5Ps” for sustainable development—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership—this session seeks to integrate critical and regenerative perspectives through the analysis of geopolitical and technological dimensions. The aim is to explore global change by proposing urban space and energy as privileged vantage points for examining the multiple crises, contradictions, and transformational scenarios that define the complexity of the present.
Drawing on the work of the AGEI Working Group “The Geography of Energy Sources” but open to all, the session invites theoretical or empirical contributions on topics including:
  • Energy and environmental, social, cultural, and political conflicts in urban settings in the context of global polycrises;
  • New analytical tools and methodological approaches for interpreting and analyzing urban processes related to energy transition across territorial scales;
  • Geographies and tools “of” and “for” the analysis of energy availability, vulnerability, preparedness, and disaster risk reduction in urban areas;
  • Analyses and case studies on governance tools for energy decentralization processes in urban contexts and in the rural-urban dynamic;
  • The contribution of energy geography to urban policies, the development of new frameworks, and proposals for policy instruments.
