We would like to invite you to
apply to the
Detroit '25 Institute on Teaching Social Action on March 22-23 at the University of Michigan
Detroit Center, which will occur the weekend before the AAG Annual Conference. Our vision is that there will be a 50/50 mix of faculty and Ph.D students.
Our
no cost Institutes train teachers to develop social action syllabi for a course (or workshop series) that engages students in leading "policy change" campaigns. The key component of this experiential and transformational learning model is that students choose a campaign to work on and attempt to enact a policy change on campus or in the community by making demands of a decision-maker during the semester the class is taught. This Spring semester there are
30 social action courses being taught. Click
here to learn more about this model.
Here is what Dr. Arun Agrawal, Professor of Development Policy at Notre Dame and Director of Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative, has to say about the Institute:
I have personally gone through the Institute and found it incredibly helpful in developing a social action course, that I then taught at the University of Michigan the following semester. Teaching social action has been one of the highlights of my career, as it provides students with concrete tools with which to organize social action campaigns. I highly recommend it!
The
Detroit '25 Institute will run from Saturday, March 22nd, 8:45 am-6:15 pm and Sunday, March 23rd, 8:45 am-1 pm; food will be covered during the Institute. All sessions will be led by Dr. Scott Myers-Lipton, Director of Teaching Social Action, Dr. Anthony Levenda, Director of the Center for Climate Action and Sustainability at Evergreen State College, Heather Maxey, a Ph.D. student from WVU, with our host being Morgan Fett (she/her), Ph.D. Candidate, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. If March 22-23 doesn't work for you, please consider applying to one of our
upcoming institutes in 2025, both virtual and in-person.
Applications are due on Monday, March 10, 2025.
Kindly,
Scott, Anthony, and Morgan
