Hello all!
Here’s the latest Outreach Digest from the Energy and Environment Specialty Group (EESG). Please continue sharing things directly with the listserv and AAG Knowledge Community pages! This digest email is not meant to replace direct postings, and we’ll be pulling from those emails as we put together the digest.
You can also submit items directly by filling out this form or emailing Maddy Kroot (maddy...@wisc.edu).
You can also follow the Energy and Environment Specialty Group on our Bluesky account (@aag-eesg.bluesky.social) or on our website (https://www.eesg.org/home).
EESG News:
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for EESG’s next New Energy Speaker Series talk, by Adam Hanieh (University of Exeter). In his talk “Greening the Gulf? Renewables, Fossil Capitalism, and the ‘East-East’ Axis of World Energy” and drawing upon his recent book Crude Capitalism (Verso 2024), Adam Hanieh explores the growing role of the six Gulf Arab states (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman) in solar, wind, and other climate technologies that underpin dominant approaches to the 'Green Transition'. He situates this in the Gulf’s ongoing fossil fuel production, as well as the emergence of a new ‘East-East’ energy circuit that links the Middle East and China/East Asia, encompassing fossil fuels, petrochemicals, and renewables. This East-East energy axis is creating deepening interdependencies between capital accumulation in the Middle East and East Asia, and carries crucial implications for the possible future trajectories of the climate emergency. The talk will be held on Dec 5, 10am Eastern. Click here to register.
EESG Awards! Every year, the EESG distributes awards that recognize excellence within the subdiscipline of energy geographies. We seek to distribute funds with the intent to elevate the subdiscipline, amplify brilliant work, and alter socioecological injustices within our sphere of influence. In support of our Mission, Vision and DEI commitments, we especially welcome and encourage submissions from anyone who identifies as a member of an underrepresented or marginalized group.
The awards we will offer this 2025-2026 annual cycle are the following:
1) Best Student Paper Award ($200)
2) Dissertation Data & Fieldwork Award ($800)
3) Advancing Diversity & Inclusion Award ($200)
4) Powershift Award ($200)
5) Energy Luminary Award
Applications are due Thursday, January 15th, 2026 at 11:59pm ET. More information on past winners and how to apply is available on the EESG website. Nominate yourself or a colleague!

Are you organizing a session for AAG 2026? Would you like to request sponsorship by the Energy and Environment Specialty Group? Please complete this sponsorship request form.
Note that effective March 31, 2025, the EESG leadership team voted to require all events, gatherings, happenings, or meetings to have a virtual option for participation in order to receive our official sponsorship. Virtual options include (but are not limited to) virtual streaming, hybrid sessions, with or without an option to have the have the event recorded for asynchronous viewing and future engagement. This decision was made to support the EESG's ongoing commitments to climate action, decarbonizing AAG meetings, and improving accessibility of EESG events to those who cannot be physically present.
Further questions about EESG sponsorship of sessions should be directed to the EESG email (aag....@gmail.com) or the current EESG secretary, Maddy Kroot (maddy...@wisc.edu).
You will hear back via email about your request within a week. Upon email approval of your sponsorship request, you will need to manually add EESG sponsorship to your session within the AAG portal.
Looking for a session for your work? Click here for the current list of EESG’s sponsored sessions for AAG 2026.

Not an EESG survey, but Joshua Merced at Northern Arizona University is seeking participants for a survey on Teaching Climate Change in Higher Education. This project explores how political, institutional, and cultural pressures shape climate change education in higher education. By centering faculty experiences, the survey aims to better understand how these dynamics influence both classroom teaching and students' access to climate literacy. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Participation in this research study is voluntary, responses will remain confidential, and syllabi submissions will be redacted of any identifying information. Click here for the survey.
Also not part of the EESG, but may be of interest: for those whose work intersects with energy history, there is a new listserv (EnergHist) connected to the energy history subgroup of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT). You do not need to be a member of SHOT to join. Click here to join.

What is this email?
The Energy and Environment Specialty Group sends out a digest email every two weeks with events or opportunities we think might be of interest to the specialty group. This email is not meant to be an exhaustive list or to replace regular messaging on the EESG listserv, but as a way to compile information and resources together in one place.
