Dear UIDAI team,

We have got information from our customer that some RD service vendor are using SSL binding with port range 11100 to 11120, and this can cause issue in future,

Because if Vendor has not managed unbind of SSL to the port by any chance (like crashing RD service and then uninstall without unbinding SSL from port), in this case port will no longer available with http.

Please clarify over this, whether vendor must use custom port for HTTPs or has to use pre-defined port range of 11100 to 11120.

Dear UIDAI team

The concerned raised by Mahesh is correct and UIDAI should mandate all vendors not to use HTTPS on these port, the HTTPS support can be provided on any other custom port.

Will this blocked port be not available after a system reboot also? If a port is blocked for a while, there are other 19 ports to bind. Can we not continue?

Port binding is the process and the setting and state will be stored itself into the windows and registry and configuration file with certificate and its thumbprint. SSL binding with port cannot be removed unless you are unbinding it though the system restart.

And using of the port range for SSL is not suitable. Why to increase the support calls and who will justify about not used first port and moved to second port?

Moving to second port is by design of the API. There shouldn't be any issue with it.
If a vendor is hardcoding to first port, then it should be corrected.

I give you case, the customer installs RDservice of one vendor and binds the vendor binds port 11100 to HTTPS. The customer also installs other RDservice.

After restart if the second Rdservice starts first it will be on 11100 and the actual RD will be on 11101. Now the 11100 is bounded to SSL but RD service is not supporting and other RDservice does not have SSL binding on port. This will increase support calls and the resolution of the same by support team is not possible without remote access of client system and detail checking.

Dear Mahesh

Dear netaji,

Any vendor is not hardcoding port number and everyone is knowing about the guidelines of port usage.

Is there any guideline available to use port range 11100 to 11120 for HTTPs anywhere?

I don’t know why this kind of arguments I am receiving as it is clearly mentions about http protocol over port 11100 to 11120 in guidance document?

We are discussing (not arguing :) ) and trying to understand how custom port will solve port blocking issue.

In any case, application has to reconnect to the new RDService port for further communication.

Custom port is a specific port has been fixed at vendor level. But the port range 11100 to 11120 is shared between all vendors.

So custom port can solve this issue.

What happens if the vendor's RdService itself crashes. The port is blocked and the vendor donot have any other choice than rebooting the host.

So API cannot solve our operational issues. Let's keep them separate.

In case of rd service crash, and reboot of system, ssl is still bind with the port then rd service will pick-up that custom port due to same certificate availability, but this is related to only custom port, and will not affect shared port range. So in case of other vendor’s Rd service is install the it will pick prior port instead of moved on next port.

Also RD service has to perform activity of unbind port and binding port every-time to avoid failure of HTTPs deployment.

So, Chances of port non-usability can be decrease.

Is the port blocked by SSL certificate or TCP/IP?

Why can't we delete all SSL bindings of a port before start listening on the server socket? And start a fresh SSL binding each time RDService is started?

Is that not a cleaner approach? Why should we hang around with unused SSL bindings?

Thanks,

Port will be blocked by SSL first, listening port is second thing.

SSL cannot be unbind from port without thumbprint and credential, otherwise any one can unbind the ssl from port and cause failure for other vendor or application.

Dear UIDAI Team,

Since many days the answer is pending for my query in trial chain.

I want to resume my question again as simple way as below:

Is RD Service can use the port range 11100 to 11120 for httpS protocol?

Many clients are asking this since long time but still we have confusion and we are not able to give proper answer to them or not able to provide solution to them.

Mahesh Patel

RDService must be having the thumbprint and credentials unless SSL is configured manually.

Thanks,

I would implement https as a wrapper on custom port. The wrapper will call standard RDService API on 11100 to 11120.

My RDService would be common for all applications.  Https support and browser compatibility etc will come as a vertical wrapper.

Expanding RDService scope horizontally for all customer features/requests would make my RdService a never ending story.

This is my way of implementation, please ignore if that doesn't work for any of you.

Thanks,
Netaji Rao D

Dear Jyjesh sir,

As scanning https ports for RDS requires certificate exchange for successful communication, other RDS running on non-https will not be able to scan such RDS running on https successfully.

We already had encounter such problem with one of our SI and we suggest having separate port ranges for https.

If needed, I can send you personal email describing the whole scenario for further understanding.

Thanks,

With much gratitude and respect,

For Biomatiques Identification Solutions (P) Ltd.

Dear Pratik

Same port range is achievable, even on same port HTTP and HTTPS both can be served detecting protocol handshake.

Dear Ketan,

The problem is, the app developer will mostly stick to the one protocol, if 1st integration is with https then they do not scan http. This is causing app to modify each time new RD Service to be integrated and demises the whole purpose of simplified integration. This also means, they have to scan 42 ports and not 21.

Kindly suggest. Thanks,

Dear Pratik

Providing HTTP and HTTPS support both on same port makes scan of only 21 port, not 42.

The application on local machine (java , C# application and HTTP website) can use HTTP , i.e. http://loclahost:111XX, whereas HTTPS websites can use HTTPS, i.e. HTTPS://localhost:111xx.

This way it becomes easy for app developer to integrate as only change is HTTP and HTTPS in URL.
