I am considering the use of the Vantage Lite by Prentke Romich
Company, using AAC language software of Minspeak and Unity, for my
nonverbal 40 year-old son Ben with a medical diagnosis of autism.
Currently he has no assistive technology device but has fairly
sophisticated independent self-initiated gesturing including yes/no
head movements, and a type of supported typing.

Any information from the members of AAC Parents?

I can't speak to the Lite part but the Vantage is what our 3 year old used until he found his own voice.  He had no problems using minspeak.  His device changed his life.  I thought the after hours teck support was outstanding!  What ever he uses the best of luck to him and you.  Mary-Clare

Hey There

We are actually just now doing a trial of a Vantage for my 7 year old
son. He has been on a dynavox Maestro for the last year but his
speech therapists feel the Vantage may grow with him more with the
Unity/Minspeak system. The Vantage follows a whole system of language
aquisition through motor planning (aka LAMP) that is pretty amazing
and really helps teach language and functional communication. Don't
get me wrong, I have nothing against the Dynavox company but our
Maestro has been sent back nine times in ten months for repairs which
has not allowed for consistency for him.

We have been using the Vantage for about a week on and off as we
trying to do a slow transition and he has already picked up on his
most important requests. The biggest difference I see is that with
the Vantage my son will need the use of the key guard where on the
Dynavox he did not. The classification on the Vantage also takes
awhile as a parent to learn but once you see play with it for awhile
it makes a little more sense. It really is its own language.

Hope this helps - Feel free to ask any questions and I will do the
best I can to answer

Lisa

my daughter uses a vantage lite with unity 84.  She is 6 and she can definitely speak her mind.  I love that she can create her own spontaneous sentences.  best of luck to you!!

Hi Lisa or anyone familiar with the Vantage,

Do you know if the Vantage is a dedicated device or can you access the internet and use other software on it?  Also, does it have capability to pair with a phone on blue tooth so the user can text to their friends?  How can your users access the internet and send e-mails, etc using the Vantage?

Thanks,

Vicky

the vantage and vantage lite are dedicated devices.  They won't access the internet
or do other computer functions.  I believe you can use an aircard in them for cell phone access, though we don't do this with my kids.

You can find out more information about PRC devices at their website: www.prentrom.com

Our son uses the Vantage Lite device with Picture Word Power as his
language system. Yes, you can connect to Bluetooth with the Vantage;
we have used it to place phone calls through my cell phone. I assume
you can use it to text in that way, also. Although the Vantage Lite
itself does not have the ability to access the Internet (it is a
dedicated device), you can use the Vantage to enter information into
Word or an email by connecting to your computer with a bluetooth
adapter or a USB cable.

If your child needs computer access you might consider the Eco which uses the same language system, but also has the ability to connect to the computer.

My daughter is an Eco user and has been successfully using PRC products since the age of 3.  She is now 9 years old and is fully included in regular education which I am sure is partially because of her ability to communicate effectively with her device.
