Perhaps not the best list for this but not sure where else to post...

Do folks have recommendations for workers comp insurance for tech consultancies in Michigan? We're about to hire an employee and so I think we will need this (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Thanks.

(Perhaps there should be a MI tech small business email list? Is there one already?)

I strongly recommend going with a company that handles payroll, automatically withdraws employment taxes, etc., and handles workers comp insurance for you. There is a lot you have to do for employees, and you can’t afford to mess it up. We use Paychex (I can send a referral if you want), but there are several companies that do this sort of thing. It’s pretty inexpensive, and almost certainly cheaper than your time it’d take if you try to do everything yourself.

Nice. I was going to use Quickbooks payroll, but I imagine they don't do the workers comp thing?

I have no idea, they might. Our workers comp insurance is through Travelers; Paychex just handled it for us, as they pretty much already have all the partnerships in place that we could need. They use Travelers for this, they use Fidelity for 401k and HSA/FSA, and pretty much anything else pertaining to employment that you can think of.

I can also recommend TriNet. I can probably get you a contact if you're interested. They also offer a free consultation.

For the payroll stuff, I highly recommend zenpayroll. It's WAY cheaper and WAY nicer than those other, legacy service providers.
I use Emily Korotkin for all of my insurance stuff; super helpful and efficient => emi...@korotkin.com

Is Zen Payroll really way cheaper? From their pricing page, it looks like it’s about the same price as Paychex. We have 7 people at Alfa Jango, and pay about $66/mo (and I believe it stays the same until we get to about 10 people). According to their pricing page (https://zenpayroll.com/pricing), Zen Payroll would be $53/mo for us now, and $65/mo for 10 people. Seems like maybe it’s a little cheaper, not WAY cheaper.

Hmm yeah. It's been awhile since I did my comparison shopping. At the time, I remember that being the result, but sounds like I'm wrong. I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression. Also when I did my research, Zen Payroll wasn't available in Michigan, yet; I remember being eager for it to come here because they were, by far, my favorite choice. I also remember, and even looking now, was turned off by the legacy sites that forced you to get a "quote" from them rather than just giving you all of the info right up front, but that may just be a personal preference.
