Because EPUB 2 and Amazon's KF8 formats do not support MathML and even many EPUB 3 readings lack MathML support, publishers have resorted to using images to represent mathematical expressions. As a fallback solution, we and others are recommending that publishers include a textual description of the math (e.g., "a equal b plus two") in the alt property or desc SVG element and a link to a webpage with the original MathML. We are planning to provide a tool to automate this process call MathML Cloud (
http://tinyurl.com/mathml-cloud-edupub or
download Powerpoint version). Since we can't force the publisher to include the link to the original MathML, I'd like to suggest that we create an accessibilityFeature to represent what minimum/fallback accessibility is provided with the image. I don't think we should use the general "alternativeText" value, but create a new value called "textualMath". What do others think?
