Because EPUB 2 and Amazon's KF8 formats do not support MathML and even many EPUB 3 readings lack MathML support, publishers have resorted to using images to represent mathematical expressions.  As a fallback solution, we and others are recommending that publishers include a textual description of the math (e.g., "a equal b plus two") in the alt property or desc SVG element and a link to a webpage with the original MathML.  We are planning to provide a tool to automate this process call MathML Cloud (http://tinyurl.com/mathml-cloud-edupub or download Powerpoint version).  Since we can't force the publisher to include the link to the original MathML, I'd like to suggest that we create an accessibilityFeature to represent what minimum/fallback accessibility is provided with the image.  I don't think we should use the general "alternativeText" value, but create a new value called "textualMath".  What do others think?

I meant to say "EPUB 3 reading systems lack..."

This makes sense, assuming that students will want to (and have enough choice to) distinguish between different types of math accessibility. Fallbacks are important even if publishers include the link to MathML on the web, since students may be reading offline.
