What is the most powerful programming language to learn??

I know how to write HTML and TURING (like BASIC) and I'm wondering where to
move on to:
VISUAL BASIC, C++, C, VISUAL C(+), JAVA....

Where is the future in programming???

please post your response....

THANX,
A.V.

All these languages have their advantages and disadvantages. Visual Basic
and Visual C++ are widely used because of thier simplicity. They are
powerful in the sence that they increasse productivity. You can get an
application done a lot faster with these languages then with any other
because they are "Visual" and easy to use compared to other Languages.
C++, on the other hand is powerful, in the sence that you can write code
that executes faster and more efficiantly then any "Visual" language, but
it takes longer to write an app in C++ than it does in Visual C++ (C++ is
less productive). The Bottom line is, if you want to write Windows apps
right away and your apps don't need a lot of power, then I would choose VB
or VC++.

This probably isn't the right forum for this question, but I'll take a hack
at it anyway.

Visual C++ is not any less powerful than "plain" C++. It includes a fairly
up-to-date and complete implementation of the current C++ standard, in
addition to its "visual" features.

Hi !

>What is the most powerful programming language to learn??

There is not a single anwser corresponding to that subject.

But there is the object oriented programming as a very powerfull
paradigma, provided in languages like C++, Pascal, Java, Smalltalk....

It is said, that in the next computer geration the logic programming
like Prolog or Lisp will to come.

The Visual Programming is a powerful direction, mainly to build User
Interfaces, but you've got to see, that there is a code generator
behind, which translates the visual statements and links together. For
standard use a good purpose, but not for developping stuff.

And not to forget, old langages such as Cobol are even today still in
use in mainframes.

But the languages are often quite the same. F.ex. C++ is the oo of C,
Java is based on C++ ,......
C / C++ is the most important language, and that will remain for the
next 10 years. Everywhere you apply for, C++/C knowleage is demanded.

The Unix shell programming and script languages such as Perl are
important as well.

Depending on wether you wanna learn it just for fun for yoursself, or
for a programmer job, and which direction of information (networking,
or standalone application, hostmaintanance, AI,database..)

ADVICE:
You have to learn C++, but it's hard to start with. (Most colleges
start up with pascal, nice simple but unusefull.) So start up with
JAVA, good selfteaching books, such as "Teach yourself Java in 21
days, by Laura Lemay and C.L. Perkins, vom sams net, ISBN
1-57521-030-4) It shows you the power of the C++ without there
problems, brings you near to the web based application with retriving
data from remote servers. Use the develop enviroment Visual Cafe (for
Java) to get in touch with the visual design of GUI, to build up the
examples from the book. That way you will learn Object oriented, C
oriented, Web based and visual programming within 21 days.

Based on that knowleage, go ahead to a specified direction.

Me, I'm currently involved in a streaming video project for my
institute for information technologies of the Uni Zurich and for a
bank and I need knowleage in Unix programming (shell and C), Visual
ones, Java and Assembler all the same time. So, I guess you've got to
see it as well, do not fix on one, learn several!!!

Yours Lars
