بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
EID MUBARAK everyone! May Allah accept your acts of worship during the blessed days of Dhul-Hijjah.
Eid sunnahs:
1- Perform ghusl and wear your best clean clothes (keeping in line with Islamic etiquette): It is reported that Ibn Umar (ra) would perform ghusl before going to the prayer. [Muwatta]
Umar (ra) gifted the Prophet (pbuh) with new clothes and said “Take it and adorn yourself with it during the Eid and when the delegations visit you” [Bukhari]
2- Engage in takbir. Takbir is recommended for males, females, young and old: The Prophet (pbuh) would engage in takbir from the moment he exited his house until he arrived at the prayer place. [sahih]
The transmitted wording of the takbir is: “Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha ila Allah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lilah al-hamd”. More here.
3- Walk to the mosque if you can. Ali (ra) stated that it is from the sunnah to walk to the place of worship for Eid prayer. [Tirmidhi- classed as hasan]
4- Pray the Eid prayer: This is an important sunnah of the day to be prayed in congregation. It is prayed after sunrise. Read more here.
Please note that it is encouraged for women and children to go as well. The Prophet (pbuh) would take his wives and daughters to the two `Eids [Ibn-Majah and Bayhaqi]. This is corroborated by Umm `Atiyyah’s report in Bukhari and Muslim.
5- Return from a different route to that which you came: On the Day of Eid the Prophet used to return (after offering the Eid prayer) through a way different from that by which he went. [Bukhari]
6- Offer the Udhiya. Sacrificing the udhiya is a confirmed sunnah. Read more here.
Udhiyah refers to the animal (camel, cattle or sheep) offered as a sacrifice, and it as an act of worship dedicated solely to gain Pleasure of Allah.
7- Be charitable: After the Eid prayer, the Prophet (pbuh) went towards the women along with Bilal (ra) and advised them to pay alms and so they started giving their earrings and necklaces (in charity). [Bukhari]
8- Enjoy the day: yes this is also a sunnah! The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “They are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of God.” [Bukhari]
