Topic D: Walter’s Scapegoat
Walter Younger one of the main characters in the play, A
Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry struggled with his dreams
throughout the play. His dream of investing in a liquor store and
eventually moving out of his Mama’s house was shot down by the members
of his family. Such as Mama strongly stated, “And there ain’t going to
be no investing in no liquor stores”. (Act 1 scene 2 pg. 70)
Mama decision wasn’t the real reason why Walter didn’t
pursue his dreams. His suppose ably friend Willy was disloyal to him.
Walter took the $6,500 that Mama gave him, which half of it was for
Beneatha schooling and him and invested in the liquor store. When he
gave the money to Willy to bring it to Springfield to invest, Willy
took off with the money. Walter felt betrayed, “…Man… I trusted you …
Man, I put my life in your hands…”.(Act 2 scene 3 pg. 128) In this
case not only one person is to blame for the responsibly for Walter’s
dreams not coming true.
