Walter and Prometheus

Before I only had a brief knowledge of the Prometheus in which I knew
he was slung around a stone and was to be feasted upon daily for some
form of treachery but I did not know that he betrayed the gods and had
his greatest creation-man-punished for stealing both fire for us and a
part of the god's feast. Ironically, this same situation seemed to be
happening with the characters in the story A Raisin in the Sun were
Prometheus seems to be represented by Walter and the gods such as Zeus
who hold back his dreams are like Mama and Ruth. Walter seems to be in
common with Prometheus due to the main fact of wanting to help his
greatest creations have the best lives as possible; although,
Prometheus’s greatest creation was man, Walter’s seems to be his
children and his own life. Walter’s idea of helping his family is to
bring as much money in as possible to support them and to do that he
proposed an idea of buying a liquor store (similarly to Prometheus who
gave man fire since he wanted to see his creation’s prosper). As well
as Walter and Prometheus, there is also Mama who is similar to Zeus
who did not want too much power given to Prometheus’s creations.
Similarly, Mama does not want the money from her husband’s death to be
used for the unrighteous gain for others so in other words she feels
that Walter is out of place to request for the use of “blood money”.
Ruth is like Pandora a god created for nothing more than the
misfortune of others and was made specifically to inflict despair on
Prometheus’s creations. However, Ruth may not realize it but the
pregnancy and abortion is indirectly affecting everyone since she is
sacrificing a child’s life so that way they can live easier lives
which is sort of eating Walter from the inside and throwing him for a
guilt trip in some way. So know I seem to grasp a little bit of what
Walter is going through at first I thought it would be all for money
for himself but now I know that everything he does is to further his
family farther than ever. However, some people seem to challenge it
like Mama and Ruth who only see this as another one of his get rich
quick schemes and because of this, the look down on him and the idea
of bringing in money through a liquor store.
