Walter begins the play as a negative outlook, he feels as if all his
dreams have been crushed. He starts to blame the situation on Ruth,
however I don’t really agree he can take a stand and not put up with
Ruth since it is his life not hers Society has a big role on his
dreams not being very successful. Walter is set in the 1950’s based
out of Chicago were segregation and racism is at the highest point.
No matter how hard he works it will never be as he seems it to be, he
can’t go through the motions to get on with life and start his
dreams. For example in Act I, “Mama: oh-so now its life. Money is
life. Once upon a time freedom used to be life- now its money. I guess
the world really do change. Walter: No it was always money, Mama we
just didn’t know about it.” In this situation Walter is very stubborn
about the fact of how he thinks that money is life. Walters’s dreams
are of making money he believes that money allows people to live
carefree, and able to provide and support his family. Walter shouldn’t
rely on his job and money to find his freedom to the carefree
lifestyle.
