to A Raisin in the Sun
The poem “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes relates to Mama,Walter,
and Beneatha from "A Raisin in the Sun" because they both have dreams
that they would consider ideal. Walter dreams of investing in a liquor
store, but Mama does not approve of the idea. Mama wants to buy a nice
house to fufill the dream she shared with her late husband. Finally,
Beneatha wants to use the money to pay for medical school in order to
fufill her dream of becoming a doctor. Everyone in the family has
their own idea of what a perfect life would be, although some of their
dreams are out of reach. When Hughes says "Maybe it just sags like a
heavy load", it relates to all the characters and how their dreams are
like weight on their shoulders waiting to be "lifted". They know that
their dream is always lingering in the back of their mind but they
don't have the means to fufill it. Also the pressure of deciding what
to do with the money is always a constant thought for Mama, since the
money is hers. In conclusion, the poem "A Dream Deferred" relates to
the theme of the book, broken dreams.
