Allusions:
Once I looked up Prometheus, I found out that Prometheus was thought
to be very wise, and his name means that he can tell the future.
Walter, of course does not literally see the future, however towards
the end of scene two, Walter is talking to Mama about how he can
picture his future laid out in front of him. Prometheus tricked the
God Zeus with animal sacrifices, which led to Zeus punishing
Prometheus. Hercules ended up saving him, and this can relate to
Walter. He is unhappy with his job, and how poor his family is but he
feels like the check Mama received can change everything and save him,
like how Hercules saved Prometheus. Prometheus was also known for
protecting and being a large help to mankind. Walter feels like he
needs to be the leader for his family, just how Prometheus was to man.
I think this is why George says “Goodnight, Prometheus” to Walter in A
Raisin in the Sun.
