Title: Users' email that's signed but not encrypted may be unable to be opened in Outlook desktop client
User impact: Users' email that was signed but not encrypted may have been unable to be opened in Outlook desktop client.
Final status: We've confirmed that the new version containing the fix has been released for the iOS Outlook mobile app, version 4.2427.1 We recommend users manually update their iOS Outlook mobile app to version 4.2427.1, and their Android Outlook mobile app to version 4.2427.2 to remediate impact.
Scope of impact: Any user with version 4.2427.0 of the iOS Outlook mobile app or version 4.2427.1 of the Android Outlook mobile app that attempted to send or receive a signed email message without S/MIME encryption may have been impacted.
Start time: Monday, July 15, 2024, at 7:04 PM UTC
End time: Friday, July 19, 2024, at 5:12 PM UTC
Root cause: A code issue in version 4.2427.0 of the iOS Outlook mobile app and version 4.2427.1 of the Android Outlook mobile app was preventing messages signed without S/MIME encryption from being opened in the Outlook desktop client.
Next Steps:
- We're further reviewing the impacted iOS and Android Outlook mobile app versions to understand how the code issue was introduced, and to understand what prevented it from being detected in our update testing and validation procedures, which will allow us to prevent similar issues in future updates.
This is the final update for the event.
