BIG BOOK QUOTE

The first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success. On that basis we are almost always in collision with something or somebody, even though our motives are good.

I always thought that posting our locations with our anniversaries was a great way to show newcomers that AA is all over the world. So I wish you would send your locations with your anniversary dates. We don't celebrate for our own benefit.

We celebrate anniversaries to show the program works.

If we add our locations we get to show

that AA works EVERYWHERE!

Tradition Seven - "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

"To my surprise, the response of the groups was slow. I got mighty sore about it. Looking at this avalanche of mail one morning at the office, I paced up and down ranting how irresponsible and tightwad my fellow members were. Just then an old acquaintance stuck a tousled and aching head in the door. He was our prize slippee. I could see he had an awful hangover. Remembering some of my own, my heart filled with pit. I motioned him to my inside cubicle and produced a five-dollar bill. As my total income was thirty dollars a week at the time, this was a fairly large donation. Lois really needed the money for groceries, but that didn't stop me. The intense relief on my friend's face warmed my heart. I felt especially virtuous as I thought of all the ex-drunks who wouldn't even send the Foundation a dollar apiece, and here I was gladly making a five-dollar investment to fix a hangover.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS

A.A. Thought For The Day

When we came into A.A., we came to believe in a Power

greater than ourselves. We came to believe in that Divine

Principle in the universe which we call God, and to whom

we could turn for help. Each morning we have a quiet

time. We ask God for the power to stay sober for the next

twenty-four hours. And each night we thank Him for

helping us to keep sober for that day. Do I believe that

each man or woman I see in A.A. is a demonstration of the

power of God to change a human being from a drunkard

to a sober person?

Meditation For The Day

I should pray for more faith as a thirsty man prays for

water in a desert. Do I know what it means to feel sure

that God will never fail me? Am I sure of this as I am

sure that I still breathe? I should pray daily and most

diligently that my faith may increase. There is nothing

lacking in my life because really all I need is mine,

only I lack the faith to know it. I am a king's son who

sits in rags and yet all around me are stores of all I

could desire.

Prayer For The Day

I pray for the realization that God has everything I need.

I pray that I may know that His power is always available.

Letting Go

Letting go of everything at once was both painful and terrifying. I could never have accomplished this alone. It took the help, understanding and wonderful companionship that was given so freely to me by my ex-alkie friends. This and the program of recovery embodied in the Twelve Steps. In learning to practice these steps in my daily living, I began to acquire faith and a philosophy to live by. Whole new vistas were opened up for me, new avenues of experience to be explored, and life began to take on color and interest.

DAILY REFLECTION

NO ORDINARY SUCCESS STORY

A.A. is no success story in the ordinary sense of the word. It

is a story of suffering transmuted, under grace, into

spiritual progress.

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 35

Upon entering A.A. I listened to others talk about the

reality of their drinking: loneliness, terror and pain. As I

listened further, I soon heard a description of a very

different kind—the reality of sobriety. It is a reality of

freedom and happiness, of purpose and direction, and of

serenity and peace with God, ourselves and others. By

attending meetings I am reintroduced to that reality, over

and over. I see it in the eyes and hear it in the voices of

those around me. By working the program I find the

direction and strength with which to make it mine. The joy

of A.A. is that this new reality is available to me.

POT LUCK

10th Step

The Tenth Step involves self-reflection and a commitment to promptly admitting when one is wrong. Step 10 encourages individuals to take a daily inventory of their behavior, promptly admit any wrongdoing, and continue personal and spiritual growth. This step aims to maintain emotional sobriety and prevent the accumulation of resentments and unresolved issues.

Up to this point, Steps 1 through 9 have taught you to see the truth about your behavior and how the rest of the world responds to your actions. With this awareness you can now clearly see what is going on during every moment of your day. The purpose of the Tenth Step is to demonstrate to yourself that you can control your actions. You are no longer functioning like a robot under the weight of old habits or while not thinking about what you are doing.

Step 10 isn’t always easy to define or understand. Of course, you are aware of your actions, but are you taking inventory and admitting when you’re wrong or when you’ve done wrong? This personal responsibility is critical to successful recovery from alcohol addiction.

An example of working Step 10 might be getting angry when someone cuts you off at a traffic light. Just as you begin to form the profanities to hurl from your open window, you recognize that the other driver will not be improved by your anger and would benefit more from your demonstration of the right way to react to anger or stress. Instead of hurling abuse, you smile as you pass the driver, even if it’s not a real smile. By responding to a conflict or anger with grace, you have used step 10.

Another example might be that you didn’t get a recent promotion. When your boss tells you it is due to poor work performance, you disagree, and because you’re angry, you tell him off. Working the 10th Step doesn’t mean that you don’t get angry ever again, or that you don’t make mistakes. It means that if you do, you admit when you’re wrong. So immediately after your outburst, you calm down and apologize to your boss for your inappropriate reaction.

Step 10 doesn’t require you to go into a long explanation about why you’re wrong or to make excuses for it. It requires only that you admit you’re wrong.
