Tradition Eleven - "Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films."

Let's see how these two contrasting ideas--attraction and promotion--work out. A political party wishes to win an election, so it advertises the virtues of its leadership to draw votes. A worthy charity wants to raise money; forthwith, its letterhead shows the name of every distinguished person who support can be obtained. Much of the political, economic, and religious life of the world is dependent upon publicized leadership. People who symbolize causes and ideas fill a deep human need. We of A.A. do not question that. But we do have to soberly face the fact that being in the public eye is hazardous, especially for us. By temperament, nearly every one of us had been an irrepressible promoter, and the prospect of a society composed almost entirely of promoters was frightening. Considering this explosive factor, we knew we had to exercise self-restraint.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS

 A.A. Thought For The Day

All alcoholics have personality problems. They drink to

escape from life, to counteract feelings of loneliness or

inferiority, or because of some emotional conflict within

them, so that they cannot adjust themselves to life.

Alcoholics cannot stop drinking unless they find a way to

solve their personality problems. That's why going on the

wagon doesn't solve anything. That's why taking the pledge

usually doesn't work. Was my personality problem ever

solved by going on the wagon or taking the pledge?

Meditation For The Day

God irradiates your life with the warmth of His spirit.

You must open up like a flower to this divine irradiation.

Loosen your hold on earth, its cares, and its worries.

Unclasp your hold on material things, relax your grip, and

the tide of peace and serenity will flow in. Relinquish

every material thing and receive it back again from God.

Do not hold on to earth's treasures so firmly that your

hands are too occupied to clasp God's hands as He holds

them out to you in love.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may be open to receive God's blessing.

I pray that I may be willing to relinquish my hold on

material things and receive them back from God.

Joyous

We have been speaking to you of serious, sometimes tragic things. We have been dealing with alcohol in its worst aspects. But we aren't a glum lot. If newcomers could see no joy in our existence, they wouldn't want it. We absolutely insist on enjoying life. We try not to indulge in cynicism over the state of the nations, nor do we carry the world's troubles on our shoulders.

DAILY REFLECTION

A LIFETIME PROCESS

We were having trouble with personal relationships, we

couldn't control our emotional natures, we were a prey to

misery and depression, we couldn't make a living, we had a

feeling of uselessness, we were full of fear, we were

unhappy, we couldn't seem to be of real help to other

people. . . .

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 52

These words remind me that I have more problems than

alcohol, that alcohol is only a symptom of a more pervasive

disease. When I stopped drinking I began a lifetime process

of recovery from unruly emotions, painful relationships, and

unmanageable situations. This process is too much for most

of us without help from a Higher Power and our friends in

the Fellowship. When I began working the Steps of the A.A.

program, many of these tangled threads unraveled but, little

by little, the most broken places of my life straightened out.

One day at a time, almost imperceptibly, I healed. Like a

thermostat being turned down, my fears diminished. I began

to experience moments of contentment. My emotions

became less volatile. I am now once again a part of the

human family.

POT LUCK

Journey To The Heart

Honor the Seasons of Your Soul

There are seasons and cycles in our lives, just as there are seasons and cycles to nature. We move imperceptibly from one to the other– learning, growing, laughing, and crying along the way.

We accept with joy the seasons of nature. We honor them. We wouldn’t think of pulling at the tiny blades of grass in early spring to force their growth. Neither would we chastise them for growing too slowly or wilting with the first frost of autumn.

We can learn to recognize and honor the seasons and cycles in ourselves. The answers will come– small glimpses at first, like the first tender shoots of grass. We get an idea, a clue, a hint, of what we’re about to learn.

Then comes a series of experiences. Sometimes we immediately see the connection. Sometimes we don’t. We go about the business of living our lives.

Then one day we see that tiny shoot has become a fully-grown blade of grass, a rolling lawn covering the landscape. We see the connections, the lessons– and we’ll honor all the feelings that we had along the way. We’re different. We’re changed. We’re new. A new season has arrived.

And just when we think that the way it is now is the way it will be forever, another season begins. As naturally, as imperceptibly as the last. It, too, will build on what has already happened and create something new.

There are seasons and cycles in us, just as there are in nature. Learn to recognize and honor the seasons and cycles of the soul.

Getting it done is better than getting it perfect.

~Jim Rohn

By developing a flexible mind-set and releasing our attachment to a specific outcome, we are able to proceed toward our goals feeling relaxed and optimistic. Our feelings of aggression usually arise when we are trying to force something to happen in the way we believe it should. Rather than trying to control every aspect of our goals, we can instead choose to relax our focus and release our attachment to specific outcomes.

Tradition Twelve - "Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities."

THE spiritual substance of anonymity is sacrifice. Because A.A.'s Twelve Traditions repeatedly ask us to give up personal desires for the common good, we realize that the sacrificial spirit--well symbolized by anonymity--is the foundation of them all. It is A.A.'s proved willingness to make these sacrifices that gives people their high confidence in our future.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS

 A.A. Thought For The Day

This sober world is a pleasant place for an alcoholic to

live in. Once you've gotten out of your alcoholic fog, you

find that the world looks good. You find real friends in

A.A. You get a job. You feel good in the morning. You eat

a good breakfast and you do a good day's work at home or

outside. And your family loves you and welcomes you because you're sober. Am I convinced that this sober world is a pleasant place for an alcoholic to live in?

Meditation For The Day

Our need is God's opportunity. First we must recognize our

need. Often this means helplessness before some weakness or sickness and an admission of our need for help. Next comes faith in the power of God's spirit, available to us to meet that need. Before any need can be met, our faith must find expression. That expression of faith is all God needs to

manifest His power in our lives. Faith is the key that

unlocks the storehouse of God's resources.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may first admit my needs. I pray that then

I may have faith that God will meet those needs, in the

way which is best for me.

Action

"Then they outlined the spiritual answer and program of action which a hundred of them had followed successfully. Though I had been only a nominal churchman, their proposals were not, intellectually, hard to swallow. But the program of action, though entirely sensible, was pretty drastic. It meant I would have to throw several lifelong conceptions out of the window. That was not easy. But the moment I made up my mind to go through with the process, I had the curious feeling that my alcoholic condition was relieved, as in fact it proved to be."

GIVING UP INSANITY

. . . where alcohol has been involved, we have been

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 38

Alcoholism required me to drink, whether I wanted to or

not. Insanity dominated my life and was the essence of my

disease. It robbed me of the freedom of choice over

drinking and, therefore, robbed me of all other choices.

When I drank, I was unable to make effective choices in

any part of my life and life became unmanageable.

I ask God to help me understand and accept the full

meaning of the disease of alcoholism.

POT LUCK

Gifts

You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.~Kahlil Gibran

The things that really count in life are not those we can hold in the hand, but those we cherish in the heart. Material possessions can be replaced, at least in part, if they are stolen, lost, or destroyed. But those things that are of greatest value to our security, serenity, and continued growth are safe within our minds and hearts. Even when we give generously from this store of precious spiritual tools, they magically remain with us to be given away again and again. We are taught to give, share, and be helpful without expecting others to be in our debt.

When I give of myself, the sharing doesn't stop after a single act. Those gifts are passed from one to another to form an endless chain of love.

Tradition Twelve - "Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities."

As a rule, the average newcomer wanted his family to know immediately what he was trying to do. He also wanted to tell others who had tried to help him--his doctor, his minister, and close friends. As he gained confidence, he felt it right to explain his new way of life to his employer and business associates. When opportunities to be helpful came along, he found he could talk easily about A.A. to almost anyone. These quiet disclosures helped him to lose his fear of the alcoholic stigma, and spread the news of A.A.'s existence in his community. Many a new man and woman came to A.A. because of such conversations. Though not in the strict letter of anonymity, such communications were well within its spirit.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS

 A.A. Thought For The Day

As I look back over my drinking career, have I learned that

you take out of life what you put into it? When I put

drinking into my life, did I take out a lot of bad things?

Hospitals with the D.T.'s? Jails for drunken driving? Loss

of job? Loss of home and family? When I put drinking into my

life, was almost everything I took out bad?

Meditation For The Day

I should strive for a friendliness and helpfulness that will

affect all who come near to me. I should try to see something

to love in them. I should welcome them, bestow little

courtesies and understandings on them, and help them if they

ask for help. I must send no one away without a word of cheer, a feeling that I really care about them. God may have put the impulse in some despairing one's mind to come to me. I must not fail God by repulsing that person. They may not want to communicate with me unless they are

sure of a warm welcome.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may warmly welcome all who come to me for help.

I pray that I may make them feel that I really care.

Unity

In many self-governing countries we are now seeing the inroads of ignorance, apathy, and power-seeking upon democratic systems. Their spiritual resources of right purpose and collective intelligence are waning. Consequently, many a land has become so helpless that the only answer is dictatorship. Happily for us, there seems little prospect of such a calamity in A.A. The life of each individual and of each group is built around our Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. We very well know that the penalty for extensive disobedience to these principles is death for the individual and dissolution for the group. An even greater force for A.A.'s unity is in the compelling love that we have for our fellow members and for the principles upon which our lives today are founded.

DAILY REFLECTION

SELF-HONESTY

The deception of others is nearly always rooted in the

deception of ourselves. . . . When we are honest with

another person, it confirms that we have been honest with

ourselves and with God.

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 17

When I was drinking, I deceived myself about reality,

rewriting it to what I wanted it to be. Deceiving others is a

character defect—even if it is just stretching the truth a bit

or cleaning up my motives so others would think well of

me. My Higher Power can remove this character defect, but

first I have to help myself become willing to receive that

help by not practicing deception. I need to remember each

day that deceiving myself about myself is setting myself up

for failure or disappointment in life and in Alcoholics

Anonymous. A close, honest relationship with a Higher

Power is the only solid foundation I've found for honesty

with self and with others.

Mental Arguments are bad Thinking

Serenity

Again and again we hear that bad thinking and drinking are linked together. Bad thinking is any line of thought that tends to be destructive. Mental arguments are in that class because they destroy peace of mind and self-control. We can avoid them by learning acceptance and maintaining serenity at all costs.

Sometimes we engage in mental arguments with those who seem to have defeated us or put us down. This only gives more life to the hurt we have been feeling: in effect, we cooperate in hurting ourselves repeatedly. Even the satisfaction of letting ourselves "win" the mental argument doesn't really settle the matter.

We can maintain our serenity in all situations by accepting people as they are. We are not responsible for changing their opinions. We must also accept and dismiss past mistakes and failures, no matter who was at fault. We owe it to ourselves not to destroy another moment's happiness with futile mental arguments that serve no good purpose in our lives.

Once we dismiss mental arguments, we can give our time and attention to things that really matter.

I will not waste a single second on any kid of mental argument. Anything another person said or did is forgiven and forgotten, and it has no power to hurt me a second time.
