If you deny yourself commitment

what can you do with your life?

-Harvey Fierstein

It's not how physically strong you are that matters,

it's the level of commitment that you hold in your heart

that will get you through the hard parts.

-Scott Rogers

“Alcoholism is relieved of its power

when honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness

combine within me to change my question from ‘Why?’ to ‘How?’ Then, I can get into the stream of life

and out of my own way.”

~ Penngrove, California, January 2008, AA Grapevine

Did I offer peace today?

Did I bring a smile to someone's face?

Did I say words of healing?

Did I love?

These are the real questions.

~Henri Nouwen

Happy Birthday Ma!

I love and miss you still!!

We have listed and analyzed our resentments.

We have begun to comprehend their futility and their fatality.

I always thought that posting our locations with our anniversaries was a great way to show newcomers that AA is all over the world. So I wish you would send your locations with your anniversary dates. We don't celebrate for our own benefit.

We celebrate anniversaries to show the program works.

If we add our locations we get to show

that AA works EVERYWHERE!

Tradition Eight - "Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers."

No individuals have been more buffeted by such emotional gusts than those A.A.'s bold enough to accept employment with outside agencies dealing with the alcohol problem. A university wanted an A.A. member to educate the public on alcoholism. A corporation wanted a personnel man familiar with the subject. A state drunk farm wanted a manager who could really handle inebriates. A city wanted an experienced social worker who understood what alcohol could do to a family. A state alcohol commission wanted a paid researcher. These are only a few of the jobs which A.A. members as individuals have been asked to fill. Now and then, A.A. members have bought farms or rest homes where badly beat-up topers could find needed care. The question was--and sometimes still is--are such activities to be branded as professionalism under A.A. tradition?

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS

A.A. Thought For The Day

I go to the A.A. meetings because it helps me in my

business of keeping sober. And I try to help other

alcoholics when I can, because that's my part of my

business of keeping sober. I also have a partner in

this business and that's God. I pray to Him every

day to help me keep sober. As long as I keep in mind

that liquor can never be my friend again, but is now

my deadly enemy, and as long as I remember that my

main business is keeping sober and that it's the most

important thing in my life, I believe that I'll be

prepared for that crucial moment when the idea of

having a drink pops into my mind. When that idea

comes, will I be able to resist it and not take that drink?

Meditation For The Day

I will be more afraid of spirit-unrest, of soul-

disturbance, of any ruffling of the mind, than of

earthquake or fire. When I feel the calm of my spirit

has been broken by emotional upset, then I must steal

away alone with God, until my heart sings and all is

strong and calm again. Uncalm times are the only times

when evil can find an entrance. I will beware of

unguarded spots of unrest. I will try to keep calm, no

matter what turmoil surrounds me.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that no emotional upset will hinder God's power

in my life. I pray that I may keep a calm spirit and a

steady heart.

Alternatives

If you are as seriously alcoholic as we were, we believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution. We were in a position where life was becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives. One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could, and the other, to accept spiritual help. This we did because we honestly wanted to, and were willing to make the effort.

DAILY REFLECTION

I'M PART OF THE WHOLE

At once, I became a part—if only a tiny part—of a cosmos.

. . .

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 225

When I first came to A.A., I decided that "they" were very

nice people—perhaps a little naive, a little too friendly, but

basically decent, earnest people (with whom I had nothing

in common). I saw "them" at meetings—after all, that was

where "they" existed. I shook hands with "them" and, when

I went out the door, I forgot about "them."

Then one day my Higher Power, whom I did not then

believe in, arranged to create a community project outside

of A.A., but one which happened to involve many A.A.

members. We worked together, I got to know "them" as

people. I came to admire "them," even to like "them" and,

in spite of myself, to enjoy "them." "Their" practice of the

program in their daily lives—not just in talk at meetings—

attracted me and I wanted what they had. Suddenly the

"they" became "we." I have not had a drink since.

POT LUCK

"Just another Bozo on the bus."

All my life I’ve been taught to do whatever I could to be the best. In school my parents drove me to work harder than everyone else so that I could get As and stand out. In athletics my coaches drilled us to practice harder and then pushed us to give it all we had to win. When I began working professionally, it was very clear that average performance would get you fired, and that if you wanted to excel and move up, you had to work harder and be better than everyone around you. Even when I partied, I prided myself on being able to out-drink and out-use others as well.

Because of this approach to life, when I entered the program, my ego was accustomed to comparing and to finding ways of proving I was better than you. When I heard some people’s stories, I immediately felt better than them because I had never done that. And when it was suggested that I clean the coffee mugs after a meeting, I thought that was beneath me: I mean, don’t you know who I am? All these feelings of entitlement and imagined privilege nearly sabotaged my recovery, but luckily I heard today’s quote and was able to humble myself long enough to truly understand it.

My sponsor explained to me that if I wanted to get and stay sober, then I had to deflate my ego and learn to become “right-sized.” He told me that I wasn’t any worse or any better than anybody else; I was simply a child of God. He suggested that I would get along with people better and live more comfortably in my own skin if I could strive to become “average.” It took a lot of years for me to see the wisdom in this kind of thinking and living, but now I’m truly happier being just another Bozo on the bus.
