Joyce McCann and Bruce Ames have stated a theory which matches what I
believe.
Their hypothesis from their study is that when a person doesn't
consume enough nutrients the body uses what it gets for "triage",
taking care of the day to day urgent needs and sacrificing long term
health. Thus children can eat very poorly and "seem" ok, but they are
really sacrificing their long term health.
