Hello guys,

Great that you have reached so far.

Regarding accommodation, I have some extra info for you.
I guess WOKO must have approached you to book a room with them. However, there are some more student houses where you may register and sometimes you may get cheaper ones as well. Below are the links of some student houses and their email ids. Note however some of them allow only girls. The best way is to drop an email to them  explaining your situation and inquire about price , location and availability. Who knows..you might have a better deal than WOKO. (specially since WOKO allows mostly for 6 months stay while other houses sometimes give you unlimited offer).

I asked VFS poeple they asked me to show the financial documents for 2 years amount but few students told me one year is enough. So please let me know how much should we be showing.

Any other documents apart from those listed on site are required ??

Hi everybody

I cannot tell you anything about the interview, but please note that
the visa decision will be made in SWITZERLAND, not in India. The
embassies (or VFS) just forward the documents to the Zurich Migration
Office for decision. The Migration Office requires CHF 21000 in a bank
account (bank must have branches in Switzerland, so choose for example
HSBC or Citibank; you yourself must be the account holder, no joint
accounts). After one year, when you extend your residence permit for
another year, you must again show that you have CHF 21000 in your
account.

Please follow the instructions in our immigration guidelines (http://
www.rektorat.ethz.ch/students/immigration/leitfaden_master_EN.pdf)
very carefully when applying for the visa. If only one of the listed
documents is missing, it may cause a delay of several weeks! FYI: Most
mistakes happen with the financial evidence and with the validity
duration of passports. Please ask me if anything should be unclear.

Kind regards,
ETH International Student Support

Hi,

I received the confirmation of registration and matriculation
confirmation documents.

I am yet to open account in HSBC. I had inquired at both HSBC and
Citibank but found HSBC better since you don't need to maintain a
large amount of money every month in HSBC.

However, I have begun my Visa process and have appointment tomorrow 7
June 0800 to 0900 hrs at the Embassy.

I am looking for accommodation but have not yet booked one.

Thanks,

Hi all,

Hope all are well packed for their respective courses and stay in Zurich/Basel.. In the context of above discussion, as far as I remember, its not the monthly balance but the quarterly balance that one has to maintain.. and when I had opened the account few years back they (HSBC) told me for basic SB account it was 25k quarterly balance that I had to maintain.. they tried to push me into higher category but i strongly refused them.. But from what people are telling here it seems rules have changed quite a bit... just crosscheck with your respective bank (same bank people in different cities also give different versions sometimes)

one thing i like to point out is that since most of you are gonna put CHF 20k odd worth money in your accounts please make sure that the bank automatically don't push you to higher category.. coz, if I remember correctly, one can go to a higher quarterly limit easily but reverse is difficult and involves lots of to-fro with the bank..some banks after seeing such a transaction tend to do that without even asking the customer first..

Hope things work out for all of you.

Hey,

I have applied for visa through the Delhi embassy.
You have to mail to Delhi embassy to seek an appointment. Do not take appointment from vfs. By mistake I took appointment from vfs, but when I went there they told me that I should contact the embassy first and it is the embassy which decides whether you will submit you documents at embassy or at the vfs centre.

Later on, I got appointment from the embassy.

The appointment time as you will get from the embassy is some specific time between 9 to 10 in the morning.

The person who collects documents at the embassy from you may ask some questions. But it is more or less informal. In my case, she asked me about how was I selected for the course; whether I am getting any scholarship or not; what does my father do etc.

If you have any other question, feel free to ask.

I have not yet finalized the date of travel. But it will be between 10 and 13 Sep.

-Nishant.

Hi,

I too applied for my Visa at the Swiss Embassy. I had sent an email to
them regarding appoitment request and they gave me appointment date
within 4 days of my email. Also, the time was 8 to 9 in the morning.

Do carry all your documents as mentioned in the IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS.
Please take total 3 sets of all the documents.

Also, in the IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS, there are 3 appendices. Please
follow them and prepare similar ones for yourself.

And carry Rs 4500 with you as Visa fees.

Any pending document can be sent to ETH directly which they will
forward to the Zurich Migration Office.

I have booked my tkt on 10 Sep by Swiss Airlines from New Delhi to
Zurich direct flight. Please note that there is Introductory Day on 17
Sep and it is compulsory to attend it.

Thanks,

I'm majoring in philosophy and physics and possibly sub-matriculating with a masters in physics if I can cram enough courses in the next 2 years. Not sure if there are any other undergraduates in this group, but I didn't find a separate student organization for Indian undergrads so I decided to post here. Hi Ruchik,

I'll finish my summer research at Penn and leave for India on Aug 17th and leave for Zurich on 31st before the 2-week foreign language program. Isn't Aug 1 a little too early? The ETH housing occupancy starts on Sep 1, but I had booked my flights a long time ago so I don't know where to stay for the first night. How are you planning to manage an entire month? o.O

And by bachelor thesis, I assume you have some sort of pre-arranged agreement with a professor to work on a specific research project?  Or will you just be taking classes?

@Gaurav: as far as I know most of the bachelor courses here are in German. I hope you do speak/write German or at least had discussion with the uni about it previously...and no there is no other indian students organisation at ETH. There are not many indian students at bachelors level mainly because courses are in German so there is also no separate mailing for undergrads..

Hi Parit,

Most of the bachelor courses are in fact in German. But the introductory masters courses and some of the undergraduate courses are in english which I can take. I don't know any German whatsoever but the program doesn't require you to know anyway. Most of the important courses like quantum mechanics, general relativity etc. that I would have otherwise taken at my home university are in english so its not a problem at all. The bigger problem is that while here I'd have taken 5-6 courses a semester, the ETH credit recommendations for exchange students is 20-30 credits which is equivalent to 3 courses at ETH so I'll have to discuss things and make sure I can register for more. The number of courses available in english is big enough to put me at a loss as to what to choose from them! There are 7-8 other undergraduates coming from Penn with me and I don't think they speak German either, but they're all engineers.

But yes, I had totally forgotten about the German being the reason why I didn't see any other undergrads in the group!

quick comment .. when they say a course is a 10 credit course please consider that you will get 10 credits but u will have to work for like 15 on it.. so don't go by the number of courses you can finish in a semester.. 20-30 credits is a good number for a semester.. (but again its a personal choice)

@ Parit, could you mention what do you exactly mean like working like 15 credits for a 10 credit course? And more information on ETH course load would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for the heads up. I think the problem is just that most of the physics courses that I was planning on taking are all 10 credits. And if I was staying at my home university, I would have taken the same courses here, so assuming the course material is more or less the same physics topics, it comes down to how hectic the general system of classes is, and from every single person who's either gone from Penn to ETH or come from ETH to Penn that I've met, its way more laid back there(. Hopefully, I won't be overshooting, especially since I really want to go around Europe and have fun in the one semester I get there. But at the same time I didn't want to mess up my degree requirements or overburden myself when I get back.

Also, speaking of going around Europe, what do you suggest is the cheapest way to do it? I was looking at the Eurorail passes, which while expensive, are way cheaper than getting individual flights/train tickets especially since there is no way to plan all the stuff ahead of time. I have a shitton of flights with the British Airways frequent fler program, but I'm assuming flights would still be very costly. Are there any alternatives, or should I just go ahead and get a Eurorail global pass? I find it funny how a single 2 month pass costs the same as half of what my 6 flight journey going round trip from India to Zurich and then from India to USA cost. There must be something cheaper!

well what i meant was that in my experience if ETH advises you to take 3-4 or 5 courses a semester then it is for a good reason and not that they want to keep you for longer period. I have met some students sometime back who started off with 6 subjects in a semester (coz each of them were 5 credits and doing below 30 credits a semester is considered blasphemy by some) but ended up passing (with just above average score) in 3... So, suggestion is to consider each course on its merit.. there is no general rule for courses.. talk to people who have taken a particular course previously.. i my experience some 10 credit courses have work more than 10 credits in them...

Thanks a lot for the help. By the way , will it be possible to talk to seniors about the courses or is the tutor who fixes them for you?

For travelling cheaply, there are people who travel in their vehicles to and fro Zurich and would share the ride for a decent price. But you have to book it in advance.

might help.

Hi,

For Switzerland, we don't need to get medical insurance from here. It
is required for other European countries.

For students in Switzerland, Ms Annina Wanner told me earlier that
medical insurance is done at a very minimum monthly instalment.

However, it would also cover minimum facilities though the details are
not with me.

I inquired about medical insurance with Oriental Bank. You can get
medical insurance from them at some Rs 7000 yearly instalments. It has
some good facilities.

You will have to get one medical insurance for yourself in Switzerland
irrespective of whether u have an insurance from India or not. Its
compulsory.

Its just that Oriental Bank has some good facilities such as in case
of certain emergencies with u in Switzerland, ur parents can visit u
too and their travel costs wud b taken care of.

And I don't have much idea abt facilities of swiss medical insurance.

You should consider Swisscare. I have just applied for it and that is the cheapest option for the time being being. You pay about CHF 86.20 for a 300 franc deductible. This is the one that students go for usually but you can compare plans at www.comparis.ch

Hi everybody

Regarding health insurance: Please do NOT choose Swisscare. We have a better offer, but you cannot apply for it before having arrived in Switzerland and applied for your residence permit.
Please come to my office somewhen after the start of the semester to get the application forms and fix an appointment with the insurance company. This is not urgent, you have 3 months after arrival to get health insurance (in case you would have an accident or become severely ill during these 3 months, the company you choose later on has to pay for doctors/hospitals retroactively!)

Kind regards,
ETH International Student Support

HEALTH INSURANCE:

Sorry, me again: Please do NOT choose Swisscare! The package we recommend is cheaper and has a better reputation. And: we know the people there and can help you if there is a problem. Swisscare is not even a Swiss company and ETH has not contacts there. Please WAIT with this until you have arrived and applied for a residence pemrit. The Swiss authorities are always confused if they have to deal with health insurances of people who have not even entered the country yet.... (please note: these cheap student packages do not appear on Comparis!).

Kind regards,

ETH International Student Support

@ETH Student Support: "Swisscare is not even a Swiss company and ETH has not contacts there" This is a revelation for me too. I don't know if you are the right authority to inform but I saw pamphlets of SwissCare with 'special student offers' on them on ETH message boards (at least at DBSSE), which as you just mentioned, seems to be not good. It would be good if someone from ETH take proper step and remove these ads from the message boards so that students are not mislead.

Depends on where in India you are from. The temperature in September can vary between 10ºC - 20ºC.

My personal opinion is that a jacket is not required. Your mileage may vary.
