This is interesting for many people, I think. It is called
"relationships" and is a newsletter put out by the Church on Scouting.
There is the announcement of a new Young Men General Presidency and
other stories of interest.

There are some problems politics can solve - for everything else
there's Army Rangers.
besides the "required" books that go with my position/calling, I have
many more books on the topic- in this case Scouting, in Rustys arena-
seminary. I suppose it is possible to get all the information you
need for a calling from the Scriptures, church handbooks, and
revelation for your calling. But, I do not know anyone personally,
that uses this approach.
my question- sort of a quick survey- how many of you have purchased
additional books to provide more information/insight for a calling-
Scouting or otherwise?

I use the Internet extensively, and have the scriptures on my iPhone.
HOWEVER, I am also a confessed bookaholic - just ask my wife - it
drives her somewhat crazy. she just doesn't understand the joy of
holding a book in your hands which contains (to me) priceless jewels
of knowledge and understanding. I have been this way for a long time
- probably forever.
Because of this, I have purchased gazillions of books on Scouting and
Seminary, as well as countless (well, if I could find them all I WOULD
count them) volumes on gospel topics, as well as lots of books for
work, and some more on topics of interest (such as transcendental
numbers, chaos theory, string theory, etc.), and then there's HAM
radio ...
But if the topic is "aren't the scriptures enough," I defer to the
comments of Brigham Young on the topic, and to Section 89, and to the
Purposes of the Aaronic Priesthood." I knew a man who was CES
Director and Bishop and most recently a Mission President who thought
all these extra silly books and talks (like John Bytheway) were just
that - silly. He is a good and righteous man, and he knows the gospel
well. I just wish he weren't so judgmental on this topic. I need help
with Isiah and Revelations, plain and simple as they may be.
And with Scouting.
have you read "Trails To Testimony" by Brad Harris? I highly
recommend the book- Harris has been all up and down the ladder
position wise- both in the church and in Scouting. I rate this book
up there with the one by
Thayne Packer- sorry I can't remember the title right now. both good
books for those who want to gain some insight into Scouting in the
Church setting.

That would be great. Don't you live in the NorthWest? I live in the
Atlanta area (Suwanee). If that is the case, we'll have to keep each
other appraised of our travels. But that goes for all of us on this
list, of course.

Yep - I bought it after you recommended it. Good book!

Well, Google says Thayne Packer has a book "Interests and Values of
Latter-day Saint Adolescent Males", and there is also a PowerPoint
presentation if you Google "thayne packer scouting"
(littlephilmont.digitallegacymedia.com/DeaconScoutBreakout/

Since getting the Brother John Memorial calling of 1/3 of the YSA
Advisory Couple, I am no longer ASM. But I am still a Unit
Commissioner and on the District Committee (training), and was just
asked yesterday if I would be willing to serve on the Council
Executive Committee (if I do that, wave good bye to UC). So, I am
involved in Scouting, but more with adults now than with the youth.
But what goes around comes around, and I'll be a Scouter at least
until the day I leave this estate.
It is very important for those in the Church to understand Scouting,
for all of the reasons we have already discussed on this list and
more. it is wonderful that our Stake presidency (and our Church
general leadership) really supports Scouting, as, if properly
implemented, it offers so very much to each boy, to the adults, to the
YM program, and to the building up of Zion.
It is important that we have active representation at the District and
Council levels, to ensure that the programs of Scouting are adequately
supported, and then properly implemented in out units. I don't have
to tell you how irritating it is when units don't take the program
seriously.

we live wast of SEattle- but I may be going to Atlanta this fall for a
conference- will keep you posted.
I agree with all you say- and wish that more could be done to excite
church members about Scouting- but if that fails, there is always
"Army Rangers" !!! :::)))

I have not read many books since obtaining my first Internet access in
the summer of 1992, I'm ashamed to say. I probably read more than ever,
but I cannot seem to sustain my mental focus long enough to read a book
any more. Once of my highest priorities is to overcome this problem. I
definitely see it as a problem. Over a lifetime I have been a very
bookish man. The last 15 years have been dismal on that score. --JWR
