Dear SASF Comrades,
Firstly, congratulations to comrade Gershom Kabaso for the update regarding registration of SASFROC for the Dakar-WSF. Nonetheless, I want a clarification whether the registration of SASFROC entails securing space for discussion or exhibition space or SASFROC tent or all of the above. I'm saying this because we need a base where delegates from SASF-constituency can congregate or display their advocacy stuff or use as meeting point throughout the WSF session.
Secondly, I'd like to share an update on an impromptu African Women's meeting that I attended held in Dakar, 20-22 December 2010, co-organized by ASFC/AAWORD:
OBJECTIVE: To strategize on the African Women's Forum to be held on 7th February and Women's Assembly on 9th February 2011 during the WSF period (6-11 February 2011).
FORMAT: Seminar: Day-One; held a dialogues between local women's steering committee and regional representatives from Kenya, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia; Day 2: Consultation with Senegalese CSOs/CBOs and their partners.
OUTCOME: Agreed:
Mobilization of African women delegates to WSF to attend 12 thematic roundtables on 7th February(i.e. 1) Women: Agriculture & Food Sovereignty, 2) Women: Health and Nutrition, 3) Women: Education, Sciences and Technologies including ICTs, 4) Women: Environment & Climate Change, 5) Women: Violence against Women and Girls, 6) Women: Human Rights, Democratic Governance and Citizenship, 7) Women: Employment and Decent Work [esp. invisibility of women in trade unionism and adverse effects of sex-work], 8) Women: Youth Engagement, Commitment & Leadership, 9) Women: Media, Art and Cultures, 10) Women: Diaspora and Migration, 11) Women; Access to/Control of Resources and Entrepreneurships, 12) Women: Peace & Security).
Provide each axis/theme with guidelines including being asked each axis to come-up with examples of African feminism that were practiced by our fore-grandmothers to resist patriarchy since all issues would include discussions on how to achieve meaningful gender equality and empowerment of women;
WSF-Extended should be used in order to engage with some of the numerous women that will not be able to be in Dakar for the 8th edition of the WSF, 6-11 February 2011. Delegates were urged to identify women in remote areas that should be video-linked with groups in Dakar.
Programme would comprise: debates, films to celebrate a variety of women’s livelihoods; music by female artists, poems, cultural events, video-links, women’s tribunals, ending with a colourful celebratory march within the university grounds.
Declarations from each Axis/theme of the African Women’s Forum and other self-organized events will be presented to the Women’s Assembly on 9th February 2011.
Plan of Action to be finalized thru a list-serve comprising of the local Women's Steering Committee and representatives of women's organizations in the region
Power to solidarity!
Sara
