Kiirtan

Lalita marmika is the Sam'skrta name given to spiritual dancing. When the dance and chanting of the mantra Baba Nam Kevalam are done together that is known as  Kiirtan. Kiirtan literally means, “chanting and hearing the name of the Supreme”. When performed before meditation, this dancing creates a proper frame of mind for meditation and also loosens the knee and ankle joints so that sitting is easier. It helps to create a collective flow when done in a group. Meditation should always be done immediately after dancing Kiirtan to fix the subtle vibration in your mind. Kiirtan dissolves egotism, so it should be done as much as possible. Lalita, originating with Parvati (Shiva's wife) is an ancient spiritual dance, softer in character than Tandava. Its complete name is Lalita Marmika, meaning 'Voice of the Inner Spirit'.

The Kiirtan tunes may be slow or lively; the BABA NAM KEVALAM mantra may be sung to any nice tune. The arms should be held high with the palms up to receive and to give Universal Love. The elbows should not go below the shoulders. Start with the namaskar gesture and then raise the arms. When finished or tired, also do the namaskar gesture and bring the arms down. When doing the step, be sure to bend the supporting knee. This loosens the knees and helps keep them from bothering you in meditation.

The effect of Lalita is to stimulate soft feelings which arise in the mind as a result of the soft vibrations created in the lymphatic glands, which contract during the dance. As a result of the sympathetic vibration of the dance and the mantra, the lymphatic system acts as a resonating chamber through which more spiritual feelings are distributed throughout the entire body. Combining the dance, song and musical instruments, Lalita creates a powerful devotional vibration which quickly arouses an intense spiritual feeling in the mind.

Lalita expresses the sentiment, 'I am in a happy mood. I am enjoying the Grace of Parama Purusa. I am approaching the Supreme with an uplifted heart. I am one with that Cosmic Self. I am now enjoying the only love there is--the Supreme Consciousness, my Beloved Father, whose Name is everywhere--BABA NAM KEVALAM.

Lalita arouses spiritual devotion, eliminating egotism, anxiety, hypertension and all other mental complexities. It also relaxes the body in preparation for meditation, which must always follow the Lalita in order to internalize and fix the spiritual sentiments awakened.

Normally Kiirtan, when done in a group, is done in rows and in step.
