Evangelical Manifesto

IGE Founder and President sign new "Evangelical Manifesto."

7 May 2008 -

Today more than 80 prominent evangelical leaders from across America published a statement entitled "An Evangelical Manifesto: A Declaration of Evangelical Identity." The signatories included Robert Seiple, the first-ever U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom and founder of the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE), and his son Chris Seiple, the current president of IGE. They are the only father-son pair of signatories.

Released at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the statement's purpose is to articulate a clear definition of what it means to be an Evangelical, including a strong commitment to a civil public square, both nationally and globally, that demonstrates our capacity to live with our deepest differences.

About the Manifesto Chris Seiple remarked, "The word 'evangelical' comes from the Greek word for 'good news', but as I travel worldwide, most people I meet have a negative understanding of Evangelicals, viewing us as people who wish to impose our religious and political beliefs on others. It's time to reaffirm that because of our faith, not in spite of it, we defend universal freedom of conscience."

Ambassador Robert Seiple confirmed that, "What we need is a public square defined by genuine religious freedom -- a civil public square where we know our own faith at its richest and deepest best, and enough about our neighbor's to respect it."

The Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) promotes sustainable environments for religious freedom worldwide. As a faith-based organization, IGE believes firmly in universal human dignity and is committed to the protection of all faiths through the rule of law. IGE pursues this mission with a balanced approach, encouraging governments to protect religious freedom (top-down engagement) and equipping citizens to exercise that freedom responsibly (bottom-up engagement).

Hello YFFP,

I hope your summers are starting off well. I have a project I have
been working
on and thought some of you might be interested in helping. I have been
helping
out a little bit with the website faithfuldemocrats.org. It is a cool place
where people can go and check out the latest news in faith and politics and
where people can discuss a whole host of issues they are interested in. The
site has been going through a few transitions in the last few months
and we are
exploring the feasibility of doing a relaunch ? that?s where you could come
in. Our hope is that we could make faithfuldemocrats a place where we can
really get some dialogue going on matters relating to faith and politics; this
includes everything from the campaign trail, to social justice issues, to
something you heard in a sermon. We would highlight some writers and events,
but what we would love is to have a lot of the input come from a number of
people. In order to make this feasible, we are looking for a few people who
would be willing to commit to visiting the site about three times a week or so
and doing a short post on whatever you find interesting. Seeing as many of us
are religion and politics junkies, I thought I would check to see if anyone
would be willing to help out. The timeline is still up in the air with this,
so it wouldn?t be starting immediately. If this sounds like something you
would like to do, would you shoot me an email at rno...@gmail.com. Thanks!
Rachel
