George ,

In the next months , we will see more Yak owners shifting to automobile plugs and the ignition harness sold by Dennis ... and the Champion Cy will stay with the "gold " plugs on the shelve .That will be the result !
Guy.

I wonder if the champion plugs are "priced" for military, the same way our military is known for paying hundreds of dollars for hammers.  Maybe after they are in use, a channel will open on the open market.

Hi Guys,

I can attest to the Champion’s they are a vast improvement over the Russian plugs.  We have one aircraft running on them for almost 100 hours, easier starts, smoother idle and smoother at high power settings.  They are pricy but I think they are supposed to last for 1500-2000 hours.

My 2 cents

I have been running a set of these plugs for over 2 years as a test for Champion and in the conditions that would wear out the normal champions in 100 hours (WOT doing airshow stuff) I am now well past 200 hours and they are by far the best performing plug I have found.  Starting and running even at the extreme power I use they just work.  A little disappointed in the pricing but that is there call.   I fly a lot of different M-14 powered aircraft with every plug available and these are the best hands down.   Time will tell if they last the life of the engine but I will  find out.

Ira,

I moved the batteries on mine and Dave's, it's not an easy project. I was
able to relocate them to the inspection plate area in front of the oil
cooler without cutting a larger opening. It involves making an alum
bracket to support the 2 gel cell batteries. Very tight area, and small
angle drill required, along with flush riveting tools. I will be helping
Robert move his sometime this year, if you want to come down and see us
(Lebanon, Tn, just east of Nashville).

We just moved our batteries.

I can see and feel the benefits but I was wondering if anyone has found any
adverse issues or things to watch for.

Ira,

There are a few planes that did not have additional weight in the front to
compensate for the batteries in the back. By moving the batteries, that
would make a substantial differance with the rear seat occupied, or even
the baggage loaded. My plane had 70# of weight in front, so removing it
and moving the batteries made the plane a little lighter overall, but I
didn't notice as big a change as the unweighted planes.

Ira, we've performed this modification on 4 TWs already.
We have the parts and experience performing this modification.

If you have any further questions, contact me off list.

Thanks,
Cliff

It would be nice to see an updated weight and balance sheet showing the
change in CG by moving the batteries forward.

Steve's CG moved about 5.5" forward.
John Shuttleworth's moved 3" forward. (different batteries)
Charlie Lynch moved similarly as did Rob cook.

Wow!  With a typical CG range of approx. 6" to begin with, that is a significant change.

Hi,

Yes. Had a friend install two odyssey pc 680 on the back of the front pilots seat.  Not much change in cg but not too difficult.

JOHN

I'll try to get some pictures for you.

Dennis,

It moved my CG forward (totally empty plane) 3.13".

Very noticeable improvement in flight characteristics. Was out of Cg
limits for flight with a big guy (200#) in the back seat. Now even in
the more limited acro Cg limits with the same load.

Cheers,
Steve

As I said, a 3" change is significant. Apparently Aerostar did a very poor
job of calculating w&b as an empty airplane or more importantly as a fully
loaded airplane in the original configuration. Another example of a
manufacturing company all of a sudden trying to "design" an airplane.
Another example - The 52W's baggage compartment braces were installed in the
airplane AFTER the air tanks were installed. They never gave any
consideration for the removal of the main air tank. Now, as far as I know,
all 52W owners have to disassemble not only the baggage compartment sheet
metal, but also the baggage compartment braces just to remove the main air
tank. Absolutely ridiculous.

I just pulled my bottles yesterday for testing. All I had to remove was
the sheet metal that makes the back wall of the baggage
compartment...maybe a dozen screws Wasn't a big deal.

The plane, as originally built, has some issues no doubt. But they are
all "fixable" and there is no better plane for the money anywhere else!
Except maybe a -50...wish I had one of them too.

Ira,

I moved my batteries two years ago. I have developed a crack in the skin around the hole cut for the battery access. I am working to correct the underlying structrural issue. Moving the batteries helped my CG and no adverse affects.

Hi John,

If you have a minute, can you send a picture of the crack.  We have to go back and finalize a few details w/in out battery hatch, and may want to stiffen something depending upon where your cracks showed up.
