I recently joined the ranks of TW owners and am interested in moving my oil cooler to the wing mainly to reduce CO fumes in the cockpit. I wasn't sure how bad it was till I started putting out smoke and saw how much smoke gets into the cockpit. I have already closed off the lightning holes in the wheel well and the holes around the oil lines seems like the likely culprit. I just stuffed as much heat resistant foam around the lines as I could but haven't tested it yet. Does anyone know which Positech cooler has fitting holes on the side instead of on top? I feel that is necessary for the installation in the wing.

I believe that the oil cooler is a custom built unit, I looked into it. I
think you will find that moving the oil cooler will have little or no effect
on smoke in the cockpit.
The holes around the oil cooler and door control rod are not that big that
you can't shut them off, I did easily just as you did. The cockpit is a neg
pressure area and there are many
places to get fumes. The ailerons are another area where the control rods
and fuselage and all the other holes between the fuselage and the wing under
the wing gap fairings.
Interestingly enough my 52 gets smoke in the cockpit but no CO fumes. I
tested it with a CO detector. Forcing the issue with smoke oil increases
the volume and fills my cockpit but only with smoke not CO.

Hi All,

I agree, changing the oil cooler will have little effect on the amount of
smoke you will get in the cockpit. My teammates and I have also covered all
the gear lighting holes and anywhere else we could think of to eliminate
smoke from entering the cockpit. The only thing we have done that has
provided any kind of an improvement was drilling an additional hole in the
forward cockpit canopy rail. The hole was drilled between the first hole
and fully closed. This provides enough vacuum or negative pressure to suck
most of the smoke out, not all of it but it does provide some relief.

My oil cooler is in the wing. Still have smoke in the cockpit, particularly at slow airspeed. Such as top of the loop, or hammerhead. Slow airspeed or slight push on the nose??

Gary,

Congratulations on the TW.
Moving the cooler won't do much as the slip stream is responsible for much of the smoke.

I keep a list of the TW owners. Which SN did you acquire?

Has anyone tried putting vents on belly or rear inspection panel to
pull smoke and CO to the rear?

I know of a couple of planes which installed vents on each side windshield which adds positive airflow to the pilot-

Cliff, if I decide to to move the cooler is it worth while to change
all fittings to an? I have heard that some fittings on the tw have
already been changed. Is this true?

Gary ,

Like you I fly a TW . I have no smoke in the cockpit . Kilocalories  , yes , even with the heater tube plugged with TWO plugs and isolated from the exhaust manifold ! It’s why in  July and August I fly early morning or  after 7  PM or even later . I fly with the cockpit 4 inches open even  in the SC winter ( not very harsh ) . I have added a vent on the right side windshield .

So ,I do not understand where the smoke in your TW is coming from . I do not know where you live  but if you are not too  far , feel free to come in SC and compare your TW to mine  in case there is something different at the fire wall or somewhere else . Frankly speaking , I think that moving the oil cooler below the wing will change nothing ( and it’s not an easy job I think … )

Also , you can call me after 7.00 PM : 864 – 963 – 1562 .

Best regards .

For all of those interested, I've found the cooler at Positech. It
is part #P010901 made for the Murphy Moose. Cost is $675 plus
shipping.
