To Learn

In This Issue:

1) Free Ways To Learn and Stay Up To Date In Your Field

You are receiving the work911.com newsletter because you asked to be
placed on this distribution list. It is NEVER sent unsolicited. To
unsubscribe just follow the instructions at the bottom.

We tend to focus on the free resources available on Bacal & Associates
websites, so this time around we've decided to share with you some
excellent and free resources to help you continue lifelong learning,
stay up-to-date in your field, and pursue areas of interest to you.
We'll look at two areas: free online courses offered by universities,
and free trade and special interest magazines and white papers to help
you with your job, or specialized field.

Free Trade Publications and White Papers (http://work911.tradepub.com)

Most of us are so busy, we rarely have much time to attend courses,
read long books, or attend conferences in our field, making it very
difficult to stay up-to-date and current in our professions, or jobs.
There's no question that staying current is critical to career success
and employability. That said, professional development is costly in
terms of cash outlay and time.

While you can't eliminate the time needed to learn (which, regardless,
still requires your commitment), it is possible to stay current by
taking advantage of free resources available that can be digested in
shorter chunks, rather than very long books. Happily there's an
excellent source where you can find, browse and sign up for
subcriptions to free trade publications and journals, or read
specialty reports on a number of topics.

Chances are that no matter what your job is, you will find something
useful to you. When you do, click, sign up, and when you are approved
you will receive the publication(s) you requested. No credit cards are
required.

If you are wondering how this is possible, it's really fairly simple.
Most trade publications serve one of two functions for the publishers.
First, trade magazines make their money from advertizing, and NOT from
subscription fees. So, it's in their interests to give away free
subscriptions to targeted readers, because that allows them to market
effectively to advertisers, who pay the freight.

Second, a number of companies take the position that if they educate
potential customers about a subject, those people are more likely to
become paying customers of theirs. So, for example, a company may
produce a number of educative reports on a topic -- let's say CRM
(Customer Relationship Management), and provide them free of charge,
in the hope that some of the people who receive the reports will be so
impressed with the originating company that they will do business with
it.

The result? Everyone wins. You (and I) can access some great free
material and magazine to help us stay current, and build our
professional expertise.

If you are interested in browsing what's available, go to
http://work911.tradepub.com . You will find hundreds of magazines and
publications there, sorted by category. There's no limit to the number
of subscriptions you can receive, but keep in mind that you will need
to be in the target group for each publication.

We love it there and visit regularly since the offers change. If you
find something you are interested in APPLY for it, since it may be
removed by the next time you visit. Also consider visiting regularly
since new material is added frequently.

Top University Courses Free

I just recently came across some excellent course material available
in various formats (podcasts, audio, print) from exceedingly famous
universities. Want to be a learner at University of California
Berkeley? Not a problem? How about Mass. Institute of Technology (MIT)
You can do that? And topics?

Well, at the UC Berkely site there's courses and lectures about
biology, rhetoric, psychology, electronics, computers, ecology,
history, etc. They range from basic to advanced but it's a horn of
plenty for learners. You can access their offerings at:
http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses.php .

What about MIT? They offer opencourseware on a number of subjects,
some rather esoteric, but there's also more basic stuff. Some are
obviously incomplete, while others contain reading lists, audio or
even video. Explore the offerings at: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/about/rss/index.htm

A number of other institutions offer similar experiences, and we'll
continue to bring more to your attention in future newsletter issues.
However, we'll leave you with a final resource from Princeton
University, where you can find hundreds of lectures available to
listen to or download on a wide range of topics -- political,
economic, historical, academic and practical. There's stuff on the
energy crisis, Darfur, Mia Farrow (?), economics... and mercy knows
what. If you can't find something of interest and to learn from, you
just aren't trying!
