Thanks for posting this, Lee. It comes at a particularly
appropriate time in my wood firing career. For the past three firings
I have done with Hiroshi Ogawa in his Hikarigama kiln, we have
introduced water into the soda chamber. It was a bit intimidating the
first time pointing a garden hose into the firebox and pulling the
trigger, but after several tries, its really quite exciting!
We actually spray the water during the cooling, with the hope that
it will encourage reduction cooling a la Gail Nichols soda process.
Every other stoke we spray full stream for 7-10 seconds. (count one
anagama, two anagama, three anagama...) There does not appear to be
any damage to the hard brick and the pots have been looking
dynamite!!!!
Lee- let me know how to post pics and I will share some images
of the process, as well as the results.

Peace,

Sam

Hello Sam; It will be great to see your images of pots from your
water firings. I have also been tossing in water also with good
results. I have also noticed that there is no damage to the bricks
etc.
I'll try and post some pics too. I'm still recovering from Korea so no promises!

Hello all-

Sorry I haven't yet posted the images of the water reduction...I'm
having trouble tracking down pics of the process. I did not have my
camera on hand, so I'm trying to get images from some of the other
potters. I have taken slides of the pots, so I will post those as soon
as I scan them to digital format.
Life is crazy right now; my wife and I are expecting our first child
any day now. Nine months of pregnancy = absolute chaos. Can't wait
for the baby to come... We are bracing for impact!!!

Peace,

Sam
