This google group was created over a decade ago where women in math doctoral departments could discuss their concerns. Please ask all the new tenured women in your departments and elsewhere to join the group so we can update the membership.   There are a few owners of this group including myself, Carolyn Gordon, Catherine Searle, and Bianca Santoro who can login to approve members.   Let me know if you would like to also be an owner of the group.

This group has not been updated since 2015 so please encourage all women associate professors in doctoral departments to login to google and request membership.

Hi Christina,

One of our faculty members signed up after I sent a message around.  Her name is Ellen Eischen.  We now have 4 tenure-related faculty. I’m not sure but they may all be tenured.  The others that are here (and tenured) are Shabnam Akhtari and Patricia Hersch.  A fourth will arrive in the fall of 2021.

Can you tell me more about the history of the group.  When did it start and who started it?

Sarah Greenwald, Janet Beery, and Cathy Kessel are preparing a timeline history of AWM and women in math for a special volume in the Springer AWM Series.

Hope you are well and keeping safe.

Best,

Marie

Hi Marie,

Please encourage the women who are tenured to apply to join.

I created the google group many years ago: you can scan through the
early posts.  It is not related to the AWM.

At the time it was created there was increasing concern among women
doctoral faculty about sexism at that level, while the AWM was focusing more
on encouraging women to go into mathematics and was dominated by
women at 4 year institutions (naturally because most women are in such depts).

Thanks, Christina.  I know the group isn’t affiliated with AWM.  The earliest post I see is from 2006 so I guess that is when you started it.  I’m not sure I am seeing all the posts.

Best,
Marie

The first set of posts are in 2006, one a set started by me on the Emmy Noether Lecturers (sadly all the links from that post no longer lead to anything) and one a set started by Jean Taylor starting with her Letter to the AWM written with Stephanie Alexander and Karen Uhlenbeck (which is included in full and has a conversation following it).

There are existing conversations about Prizes and NSF grants and ICM speakers.   You can add to a conversation by logging into google groups choosing the conversation and adding to it with a reply.   You can also start a new conversation with its own title.  Right now replies to this email appear under my newest conversation calling for more women to join.
