Hello all, as you're probably aware we were hit by a spammer, the
messages have been deleted and the poster has been removed from the
group.

I hope to still keep the group "open" ...

Nearly one month since I first had the spammer attack and now we're
getting hit more frequently. As much as I hate to do so, I may have
to "close" the membership which would require anyone interested to
write an email asking for access to the measurement management BBS.

From the content of the recent "flirting" spam, it appears that
someone has written a "bot" to automatically attack open groups. If
this is indeed the case, it will quickly spread like the H1N1.

I caution everyone to avoid "flirting" with these people -- if you're
interested in internet dating, I would strongly suggest a reputable
site -- this is likely a link to a phishing site.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OBJECTIONS TO ME CLOSING THE BBS, THUS REQUIRING
NEW REGISTRATIONS TO BE SCREENED?

I'LL LEAVE THIS OPEN FOR COMMENT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE ANY
ACTION.

Kurt,
Perhaps it would be best to close the group. Now that the group has been
"discovered" we will only see an increase in this sort of spam and perhaps
worse.

Thanks Glen for replying ... as you probably have already discovered,
yet another "invitation" was posted just minutes before your reply.

Changes have been made. Briefly, the security is now as follows:

-- We're still listed in the google groups directory, thus any real
user can still find us.
-- Anyone can view the postings
-- Only Members can view the email address of posters
-- Membership requires approval, Any current member may "invite" new
members, but each new membership must be approved by the
administrator.

A danger exists with me as the only "administrator" Does anyone want
to volunteer to step up as a backup admin? Glen?
