Hi all, I just uploaded a .zip file named NMSUQuadFinder.zip, feel
free to download and try it out!

Quad Finder was inspired by the KML that was formerly available that
provided easy access to the Digital Raster Graphics (DRG's) of the
USGS quadrangle maps. That KML has become a commercial product ...
so I decided to build an application that provides similar (perhaps
better) functionality.

The software provides for searching for a quadrangle map based on a
known Lat/Long in D.ms or decimal degrees. In addition you may search
by quad name, or a portion of the quad name and / or state. If you
know the map reference code you may search by that also.

Once the quad(s) have been found, a listing will appear, select the
map from the list, right-button click to download the map or to "re-
center". 9 buttons appear on the lower left, re-centering loads the
selected map to the center button, and also computes all of the
adjoining quadrangle maps. Clicking any of these buttons will
download the map identified. If a button is not enabled after the re-
center, that map does not exist (water, out of country, etc).

It's easy to use, with minimal experimentation you will see that maps
can be retrieved:
a. by an individual lat/long
b. matching a substring of the map name. Example: Searching for
ABBOT will return all maps containing those characters, eg) ABBOT,
ABBOTT, ABBOTT LAKE, ABBOTT PEAK, etc. allowing you to select/
retrieve the appropriate map.
c. A listing for an entire state
d. A listing for an entire state containing the substring noted above
in (b)
e. a one degree block of maps by searching for a partial mrc number.
Example: 32106 will return a listing of all 64 quadrangles inside of
that 1deg x 1deg window
f. other experiments with the mrc search would return a 1 degree
block spanning all the way across the country.
g. possibly other combinations that I haven't thought of ... :-)

The maps will be downloaded from The Internet Archive. The coverage
of maps only includes the CONUS 48 states.

I am the author of the software, it is being distributed as shareware
(donation-ware actually). Proceeds from the sale of the software will
benefit the New Mexico State University student chapter of the
American Congress on Surveying and Mapping / New Mexico Professional
Surveyors (ACSM-NMPS). The funds will be used to assist with travel
costs of attending State, Regional and National conferences and to
support the NSPS Student Competition teams. Details for registering
will appear as you click the EXIT button.

Happy Holidays to all of you!

I just discovered the .zip file was corrupt. I will post a repaired
copy right away.

Many of you will also receive an email with a direct link.

It wasn't corrupt, but changes are happening related to Google Groups.

Hi Kurt,

I primarily just use the quads for Maine which I already own and Terrain Navigator Pro as their GUI.

I'm surprised that some discussion hasn't been generated about this,
doesn't anyone use Quadrangle maps anymore?

There are over 50,000 quadrangle maps available via using this
software and an internet connection!  The maps are full sheet,
complete with margin data,  they are in geoTIFF format thus they can
be used to overlay other data using GIS software.  If you have access
to a plotter, the full sheets will plot using the raster-image
software of your choice (even ms-paint can handle them).

This shareware version is not crippled in any way.

Kurt,

I went to download yours and could not get it last week. I have been using this link:

and have been very happy with it.

Kurt -- the link in the email I sent to you by email will work. There's
some weirdness going on at Google Groups, they tell me that big changes are
in store beginning in January, and they will no longer support files in the
google groups. Thanks for the KML too.

Kurt,

I would be happy to try out your quadfinder, but I still don't see any useable links in Google or my email??

Kurt,
We are currently using the KML file "Benchmark Hunter Tools" published
by USGS which has all of the georeferenced quads, works extremely
well, however it doesn't contain the margin notes for each individual
quad. I find google earth to be much quicker than our networked GIS
system for superimposing dxf and ascii files utilizing an inexpensive
commercial program that will convert a multitude of different file
formats to the KML format. When I get an oppurtunity, I will check out
the quadfinder I like the idea of having the margin notes available.
For those people who are looking for older New England States 15'
series USGS Quads try this site "http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/
nhtopos.htm", the site is fairly easy to navigate. Happy Holidays to
you and your family.
