There is a new update to CMM07 at:

ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/CA/gcdb/Misc%20Files/cmm07/cmm07update/cmm07update121909.ZIP

Ron says this is to fix a couple problems:

1. Project names greater than 8 characters
2. Point names that start with zero.

CMM point names cannot be longer than 14 characters. Should not start
with zero, but did fix the problem, but no point name should be just a
zero.

Any other questions can be directed to Ron Hamilton:

Hello David, Kurt, et als,

FWIW - I've tried going to the link provided below, but it is
reportedly non-existent... although I've already downloaded this
update back in January, just thought somebody might like to know.

The primary purpose in reviving this thread, my friends, is to:

1) find out if WinCMM works on 64-bit systems (i.e., Win7)
2) find out if anybody knows how to transfer files between the HP200LX
and a Win7 machine
3) find out if anybody knows of a good single-chamber large-caliber
hand gun in the event that the first two questions run aground.

Here is where I find it at this time:

ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/CA/gcdb/Misc%20Files/cmm07/

Looks the same as your link and I see the files there.

Can't tell you about 64 bit, but if the you have isn't working for
the file transfer, you might try using the data card. There are some
adapters from USB to PCMCIA cards which might be worth a try.

What program are you trying to use for the transfer?

Thanks for the reply Jerry.

For the past... many years, I've been using TFWIN200 to shuttle files
back and forth between the HP200 and the PC. But now it seems, that
may not work with 64-bit Win7. The data card option requires the HP
to be taken out of its environmental case each time; 8 screws and
then friggin with the cables.

I've written to Thaddeus, Ray and others but I'm not holding my breath.

It was reported that the link was not working, so try the one below.

FTP downloads work better with Windows Explorer, than IE.

Just copy the address from this message into the address bar in
Windows Explorer.

ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/CA/gcdb/Misc%20Files/cmm07/cmm07update/

Then click on the cmm07update121909.zip, to open or save.

Aha, the environmental case! Okay, you got me there. I guess I
should throw a bare drive into my desktop and install 64 bit windows
7 as a test platform. Then I will have to refresh my memory on what
options there are to communicate via RS232 with the HP-200, or if
there are any obscure compatibility modes under W7. Seems like a
serial port would also be an obstacle on a lot of the newer hardware,
however you can buy those too.

I am not sure if I remember it all correctly but thought that I
recalled that the HP-200 had the old kermit program on it that going
back to the future might have versions that work under windows. I am
sure it would be a pain to remember all of how that worked. Kermit
Server mode testing.... Might even be part of hyperterminal, but I
have no idea how much of this exists in Windows platform.

Until I have a test platform, though I can't say what does and
doesn't work. Maybe someone else on here will know something. If I
find out anything, I'll let you know.

Yes, the serial port issue on legacy devices is a nuisance.

Up until yesterday (when my new computer arrived), I had three separate working ports for older devices:
  • Calcomp Drawing Board III
  • HP200LX
  • Ashtech GPS
Trying to reuse the 8-year old PCI Cyberserial Dual Port card proved frustrating. While the card fit in the only available slot, no drivers were available for it in its new environment. A new dual serial port card and its own drivers are available for the up-to-date hardware and OS, but the drivers for the legacy devices could care less. And the outcome from trying out the separate and shiny new USB to serial converter seems to reinforce this reality. I haven't tried it yet on the Ashtech PM2 receivers.

Tangential topic, but I have found the USB to serial cables to be finnicky at times, at least with what I needed it for, communications with Ashtech.  Local computer shop had a number of I/O cards, but I have not installed them yet.  My first challenge was on a laptop (dell) which thankfully still had a legacy PCMCIA express slot.  So while I could fiddle with the USB to serial cable, I found it easier to buy a little card with a serial port on it for that particular unique situation.

The HP-200 had a number of options to send/receive files.  Say that the filer options aren't working.  I will assume that the 'pocket laplink' isn't viable either, but I have no idea.  The next is that the comm program has all the old protocols, like xmodem and the one I mentioned Kermit.  I script can probably be set up to put the 200 into the right comm parameters and start kermit server mode. Then you have to find a remote application on W7 in addition to the comm port issue.  Apparently W7 does not ship with hyperterminal anymore although I see a claim that you can get a free version.  The free kermit-95 is mentioned as 'probably' working on W7.  So there appear to be some options to pursue.

Time to retire.
