Hi All,
I recently purchased a HP laptop, it is my first, however it is too old
to upgrade, and there are many drivers pre-installed for that OS (I
tried to run a live version of Linux but it could not handle it). I am
considering buying a network card, however I have 2 questions:

1, can I connect to a Netgear or D-Link wireless network (802.11g/wi-fi
in other words)
2, if so should I buy a 54 or 108 Mbps card. I have a 108 here and am
trying to hook up to a working n.w however my laptop does not even
recognise the PC card as new hardware.

Thanks for your help

Answer to your first question yes you can connect to the netgear or
dlink as long as you match the 802.11g standard for the network card.
2nd question go for the 108mbpseven though you might not reach that
its good to have the extra mbps.
you might need to go to manufacture web site and download the drivers
for windows 98 also see if you got network neighborhood on there and
use it to troble shoot your network. Last see id device manager in the
system icon in the control see if your hard ware is there if it is then
see if it got a black ! or black ? in a yekow road sign next to it. !
point mean it may or may not work up date the drivers ? mark mean the
device is not working right clicl on the devive and see if there is a
code number giving to the ? matk and look it up on microsoft website.
you need to uninstall and update the drivers. Dave.

If you are willing to be more adventurous I'm sure that although the
live cd ran slowly you could find a
non-live cd version of linux that works sucessfully. You might try to
find one using gnome(like Ubuntu).
The live cd is a poor indicator of performance becayse everything has
to be loaded via the cd
