Does anyone know from experience if these 1,2 gigabytes drives are
capable to have an OS backed up to, and then reinstalled from?

using this you can take the backup of operating system file and there is another way of backing up files of operating system thta is called sysprep(System Prepration )utility this is a utility you can create the image of your hard drive and if your operating system crashes you can recover from imaged drive.

Can this be used on a simple computer and only with XP? I went to the
links and there is no sign of a purchase or download utility. In fact
it may be only for corporate system administrators, OEMs, and others
who need to deploy the Windows® XP operating system on multiple
computers.

I know (from my own experience) that 1 to 2GB of space is not enough
room to store a complete operating system upon. Far too small.
