Fish Sauce

All of my search results for making fermented fish sauce say to use fresh fish.  Anchovies seem to be popular.  The fish monger here said he can't get any, but I should be using canned anyway.  Opinions on this?

There are folks on my FB fermenting groups that make fish sauce with fish other than anchovies.... Have you tried googling to see what else is out there?

I haven't tried it but I've read that smelt would work.
Don't see them much any more.
People used to harvest them by the buckets.
