I think this is great. One of the advantages of having the
invitation-only membership system is that it opens the door to
relationships between genealogists who share the same research
interests.
As for how discerning you should be, I am very liberal. The one thing
I want to hear from people is that they agree with the Honor Code. If
I get an e-mail from someone asking for an invitation and they don't
mention the Honor Code I ask them about it. Beyond that, I don't think
we want to be exclusive. Good intentions are enough.
By the way, I'd be sure to take these opportunities to tell users
about the Mayflower user group and ask them to join and participate in
the discussions here.

It's up to you, but I figure it's easier for people to learn how to
use WikiTree after they've started. I know, this means they'll make a
few mistakes. But after implementing the "locked ID" system it's a lot
harder to do real damage with merge mistakes.
