I get most of my email on my phone and only sit at the computer a couple days a week, but when I do, I am busy! (Ask Lianne about my tendency towards multiple emails.)
Anyway, wanted to weigh in on what my thoughts were on this. First of all, links that go somewhere I can't go just make me so, so frustrated. They could be super-valuable resources, but if I can't get to them (without expensive membership costs), then they don't do me a lot of good. On the profiles I have been cleaning up, I have been taking out Ancestry.com links (but saving copies of my work on my computer in case problems arise) if there are other readily available resources cited, especially published bios, histories, and primary records.
I also tend toward doing what Lianne had mentioned in putting the actual transcription of the record in the sources section or its own section if I can. I haven't done this much with the Mayflower folks but have done it a lot with my younger crowd, especially since some of the nicknames and such that made it so hard for me to find them to begin with are explained with things like census records, and because I have had problems with online records disappearing and me not being able to find them again (a particular Canadian newspaper in particular that solved a huge family mystery/myth via an obituary, but I can no longer find. Grr!), so that transcription helps. I enjoy looking at them, too, so figure there *may* be someone else out there that may want to take a peek at what I found.
Just my thoughts, and trust me, I am open to anything!

Yep, a lot of "my" profiles have Ancestry info in them as a result of merges from others. It is a problem, but I am loath to just edit them out. I have not used Ancestry so I dont know if editing them out will provide a loss of info to the person who had them there when I merged (I don't know if broken is the correct word. I assume the link is valid for someone with an Ancestry account). Can someone advise? As they are only several lines in an otherwise lengthy Biography section I would normally prefer not to "tread on someones toes" and remove them.
I have noticed the relative involved has started to remove some Ancestry links in other profiles without any prompting from me.
I haven't involved myself in the discussion of EuroAristos. I will leave it to others with more experience in this area.
Perhaps If Kathy (or someone else) does create something which is generally acceptable to the group,  a link to the example can be proved in the Editing_Tips page.

The example there,  William Oxley, certainly provides a good basic structure, but it doesn't address a lot of the concerns peculiar to older ancestors, in particular the problems that result from multiple merges. There's also a rather burning question about the sources section there, that pertains also to a huge number of profiles: the Ancestry.com data needs to be taken on faith since the links are broken, as I assume they are in almost every profile where they appear. This may be the time to decide what does and doesn't belong in the Sources section.

I've been thinking for a while that we need more and better examples
of "ideal" profiles. Thanks, Roger.

Paul Bech points to a couple examples from here:

We should definitely add more, and something specifically for the
EuroAristos. It would be awesome if Kathy has something we can start
with.
