Hi everyone!

A question was asked on G2G recently (http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/775/how-can-i-undo-this-merge), requesting help getting a bit of a merging mess cleaned up. I've looked into it a bit, but since it's around the right time and place for the Mayflower group, I'm hoping someone here will have more expertise than me. :)

So, basically, there are profiles for Ellen Newton, Eleanor Worden Newton, Eleanor Worden, and Eleanor Adams. Eleanor is sometimes spelled Elinor. These people might have relationships that should be connected to one of the others, because they may have been merged together incorrectly.

I'd really appreciate any help you could provide!

It took me a while to realise you guys were replying just to me and
not to the group. :) Here's what we've figured out so far (thanks to
Tim Wilder!):

Ellen Newton married John Adams in 1625 and they had the following
kids:
James b. before 22 May 1627
John b. after 22 May 1627
Susan b. after 22 May 1627

In June 1634 Ellen married Kenelm Winslow. They had the following
kids:
Kenelm b. about 1635
Ellen b. about 1636
Nathaniel b. about1639
Job b. about 1641

Ellen was buried at Marshfield on 5 December 1681 "being 83 years
old" (probably an inflated age).

Ellen is also sometimes known as Eleanor/Elinor.

Her parents don't seem to be known, so she should probably be
disconnected from any parents her multiple profiles might have.

So, that clears some things up, but then there's the pesky Eleanor
Worden, who has two profiles that are both married to Kenelm Winslow.
So I have no idea where she fits in here!

If anyone can shed further light on this and/or help with the profile
cleanup, that would be lovely. :) Please respond to the whole group!

OK, I'm discovering that there's more to this mystery than meets the
eye. Apparently, there is some debate over whether Ellen's maiden name
was Newton or whether she actually married a Newton first, thus
marrying 3 times in her life. People who argue this say that her
maiden name was (you guessed it!) Worden, though I don't know where
this comes from. Everything I find that mentions that just says that
she was probably married before because a single woman wouldn't have
come to America by herself. So what do we do here? Personally I'm
inclined to start merging the Newton profiles, going on the assumption
that that's her maiden name, but what does everyone else think?

For future reference, these are the Newton profiles that are
apparently this person:

The Worden-418 profile actually also lists Newtons as parents...?

Does anyone have any solid or reasonable sources? Just flipping
through all of those profiles, I noticed at least 3 different sets of
possible parents, and hardly any sources aside from Ancestry family
trees. Could there be more than one Elinor/Eleanor/Ellen Newton who
went to the colonies? These are very common names, and it may have
been easy for someone to conflate a few of them somewhere down the
line.

If it isn't too much trouble, perhaps it would be best to merge all
the Eleanor Newtons with unknown parents into one profile. Make this
the Eleanor married to Winslow and Adams. Make a note in the bio that
there is disputed parentage and that her maiden name may have been
Worden, with Newton being a married name from an unknown husband. Then
disconnect all the Eleanors with parents from the spouses. Check to
see if any of these other Newton parents actually had a daughter named
Eleanor. If they did, leave the "unmarried" Eleanors connected to the
parents, and make a note in the Bio that she may or may not be the
same Eleanor who married Winslow and Adams. If things become more
clear as to origin and parentage, they can be merged down. It isn't
ideal, but it at least tidies up the things that are known.

(I also wanted to pop in to say that historically, there are plenty of
reasons for an unmarried woman to emigrate by herself, so don't throw
the idea of Newton maiden name out with the bathwater.)
