So as not to step on any ones toes, I would like to continue editing and adding sources to the following profiles to be merged later into the main lines. If you prefer we could merge them first and then edit. Would be happy to assist.

Francis Cooke and Hester, son John
Cooke-1544
Le_Mahieu-18
Cooke-1543

Richard Warren and Elizabeth, daughter Sarah

Warren-2883
Walker-6010
Warren-2882

I was going to tackle John Cooke next.
Any input on these profiles is welcome.

Im not going to comment on what way this is being done on the Mayflower ancestors... but I almost always would advise editing final profiles over duplicates... as you will have to reclean up the final after merging, etc.

I think Mayflower has assigned profiles somewhere... *looking*... http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mayflower_Passengers ... it doesnt look like someone has opted to manage the Cooke's... so you might be just the man to do it... dont quote me, for sure, though as I am not as involved in this group and the page could not be up to date.

Richard Warren looks to be managed by Becky (Nally-4) so I would DEFINITELY consult with her on that profile. You may be duplicating her efforts or she may appreciate some extra help.

AWESOME of you to offer help...

Please take care with the amount of material that goes into any one profile.  When we first merged Richard Warren (mid-January), we did an "expidited merge", merging about 40 profiles, there was so much material in the combined profiles, the bio section overflowed (truncated) and the remaining material was lost.  I  private messaged the manager of one profile which was about 80 pages in MS Word before it truncated.  I never heard back.

There was a long quote from Bradford's history (Most of the 80 pages). I made a special WikiTree page titled "The voyage of the Mayflower" and linked to it.

A while later I found a super excellent profile of Richard Warren by Michael Lechner. I did not want to merge it because of the space limitations and because it showed extraordinary care and imagination, so I linked to it and cross referenced in Michael's Warren profile.

I merged Francis Cooke. Again truncation was happening.  I tried doing backups, but still lost material.  Sorry.  I cleaned up the bio-section, adding links to online sources for items like will and inventory.  Here is how I handled it:

Francis Cooke died April 7, 1663 and was buried at Rocky Nook, now Kingston, Plymouth Co, Massachusetts.
His will and inventory were recorded in the Plymouth Colony Wills and Inventories, Volume II, Part II, folios 1 and 2.
Mr.John Alden and Mr John Howland were witnesses.
The text of the will and inventory for Francis Cooke can be found here:

One reason we are merging because WikiTree was growing rapidly.  Internet space is expensive.  We all want WikiTree to remain cost free, so we need to conserve space.

NOTE: Despite the best efforts of my dad, grandpa, and grad school profs, my writing skills remain "iffy". Feel free to
edit my writing, add stuff, whatever . . .  Please keep in mind space constraints.

I seem to be assigned to Warren, Bradford and Fuller.  We are also descended from Rogers, Alden, and Cooke. Some of the Mayflower Pilgrims have millions of descendents.  WOW!!!

Becky makes an important point! While I generally do agree with Lindsay's technique of merging first and editing after, if you're merging a large number of duplicates it is worthwhile to do a little bit of editing (at least deleting a lot of the gedcom junk and consolidating sections) along the way so as to prevent the truncation issue.

Thanks for talking about this!

I suggest that for individuals actually aboard the Mayflower, the note
section should be limited to links such as to Caleb Johnson's
excellent website or references to authoritative books, such as the
Mayflower Society's "silver books" or NEGHS's "Great Migration"
series. I am not saying to copy passages or violate copyright, but why
re-invent the wheel?

Here is all that is needed for my ancestor, Richard Warren:
"Documented evidence about Richard Warren and his earliest descendants
may be found at
http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/Passengers/RichardWarren.php."

If space is at a premium, nothing more is needed.

Yes, I tend to forget that... most profiles are gedcom junk but the good ones it is very important to protect.

Chris/Lianne or anyone who knows... does it preserve the final profile at the expense of the merging profile or vice versa? If I merge Stough-57 into Stough-48 is Stough-48 all saved and 57 could be lost or could 48 be lost... or both?

Lindsay: When you merge two profiles, the biography section from the merged in profile (in your example, Stough-57) goes at the bottom, so if the resulting profile was too long, it would be part of that profile that gets cut off the end.
