As I clean up these Merovingians, I'm finding a great many citations of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, the infamous basis of some of The Da Vinci Code. As a work of genealogy, I find it to be either ridiculous or dangerous, depending on my mood.

Should I add a warning label to these profiles like "Some of the information in this bio is sourced in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, which many genealogists regard as fraudulent"?

Thoughts?

Gratefully,
Roger

Roger, you have a good idea there.   There is a lot of conflicting information and the truth needs to be emphasized. .

Yes, I believe so. It is generally regarded as a work of fiction.

Soooo when i find this cited with other sources should i leave it or
just remove it? I will check my notes to be sure that is not the only
source of information, thank you for letting me know this is not
reliable.

i would leave it... maybe make a note of its questionability... but i think it is kind of cool...  i just bought a book a cousin wrote about an ancestor based on fact but fiction... doesn't  mean I don't want to know it exists but i would like to know its fiction or possibly/ partly fiction

The best thing would be to determine what part of the profile, if any, depends on it, and note that part as being possibly/probably unreliable. In almost every case I've found, the book is used to make a filiation where there is no actual evidence in primary sources. My practice is to remove the filiation, and write "The authors of HBHG make him the son of Merovech, a relationship for which there is no evidence."

Cheers,
Roger

ok thx, alot of my entries so far only have the citations from the
site i got them from, it is my intention to research each individual
once i have my whole gedcom entered. i know many are already quite
well researched, but it will give me practice and possibly find things
that weren't on the internet before. any guidance as to reliable vs
unreliable resources is valuable so i know which sources not to use or
put at the bottom of the list for checking.

thx Janice

what do you mean your whole gedcom imported? are you creating more profiles manually?

I think a warning can be useful but I would leave out any opinion in the message.  I would change: "...which many genealogists regard as fraudulent" into "...which is a work of fiction" (or something along this line).
