Here's another suggestion:
In nickname field, in addition to no quotation marks, how about no
parentheses? If a user wants to translate a nickname, separate the
versions by commas only.

the Great, the Grande

instead of

the Great (El Grande)

or

el Tuerto, One-Eye

instead of

el Tuerto (One-Eye)

Chris has said that parentheses make for coding problems, unfortunately.

Kathy: Roger's right that parentheses aren't allowed. There are some out there because they were imported, but if you try to edit the profile, it won't let you save if there are parentheses.

Parentheses are indeed allowed in nicknames, just not in FNAB and PFN.

(although I use 'em a lot).
