SUTRADHAR

Presents

The Untouched

Translated by Vinay Varma from Subhash Sonavane’s Marathi play ‘Asprushya’

Directed by Bhaskar Shewalkar

Life or death, sexuality or spirituality, the body or the soul……. What
is the ultimate reality? Is denial of the body the only path to a
higher realm of consciousness? Is responding to the needs of the body
an obstacle to spiritual progress?

Who decides what is right and what is wrong?

The play portrays the two polarities in its two completely different
characters - Julie, a crippled young girl with an unyielding zest for
life and all its passions, and a novitiate who is preparing herself
for the religious and regulated life of the nunnery, who declares that
she is to be married to Lord Jesus. Through their dialogues and shared
experiences, we encounter the constant battle that rages within most
of us.

For Julie, it is the body that is real and absolute. She is a girl who
is frustrated despite having all her material needs answered by her
father’s immense wealth. The needs of her body are not met but her
yearning goes beyond lust: she desires love, companionship, a true
mate who will understand her and in this she despairs – who would love
a girl with ‘feet of clay’? Julie, who is on the brink of death, longs
for life, a husband, love, and fulfillment - be it for just one
night….

In contrast to Julie is the novitiate, who believes herself to be
satisfied with her circumstance, whose entire life has revolved in the
service of the Lord. The Lord is her entire world. For her, the body
is temporary, something that will perish, sooner or later. It is the
soul that is everlasting, transcending physical death.

One night, Julie meets the man of her dreams. Where does this
relationship culminate? What impact does this relationship have on the
nun?

The play deals with the climactic moment of transformation that comes
into these two women’s lives and the circumstances that lead to it.
