Subject: Breath, Body, Space - Performance Workshop in Delhi
To:

The Arshinagar Project presents Breath, Body, Space - a workshop led by founder-member Arka Mukhopadhyay.

This workshop is open to actors and dancers, but also to musicians, painters, other creative professionals or to anyone interested in exploring the relationship between breath, body, space, and the performer within.

The work is based on the idea of 'Sahrudaaya' - a group, an ensemble that breathes together as one, that is 'of one heart'

By observing and connecting with the rhythms and patterns of our own breath, we will work on grounding, centring, attention and responsiveness. We will learn how to unlock the flow of impulse from within our bodies, and thus work towards a deep and expressive physical and vocal language.

The work will focus on watching, listening and meeting, so that ultimately we breathe together as one.

We will focus especially on embodying the rasaas through breath, gaze and gesture.

While the work draws upon multiple sources, from Kalari and Kathakali to the philosophy of the Bauls, as well as the work of masters such as Grotowski and Barba, ultimately the participants will be encouraged to look within, to work with their inner images, to search and ask questions with their bodies, their voices and their whole beings, and to meet the others, egolessly and with love

We will thus work simultaneously on connecting with ourselves, connecting with others and connecting with the space. From this organic connection, we find our presence.

The workshop will culminate in a short, devised performance

Testimonials from participants of previous sessions:

"Every time I attend a workshop I like to experiment or try somethings I have learnt, in my classes at school. so I did, this time as well. For a week I worked with my students on breath, body and space. Definitely, not at the level we worked at but at some level to which my young people could relate.
It was as interesting as surprising to see them understanding the rhythm of one's own breath and we did reach a level where we could understand the rhythm of our body.
I was able to speak to them about the space and its energy and how one can really move by the impulse generated within and the response floating on the energy received from the space.
This week's success ( I enjoy motivating myself ) at school front is all because of the workshop and the enriching journey I took with you. Most of the workshops in Delhi are generally superficial, surface level talk and activities and I felt, this one was very intense , in depth and amazingly refreshing.
It is only after we finished and I tried it out with my students, that one came to realize that the objective was really tough one but you made the journey very smooth. "

"The workshop took me to some uncomfortable spaces(in a good way!) and I enjoyed experiencing that and learning in an unfamiliar format/structure."

"Personally, for me the workshop was just this wonderful space in which I could lose myself and find myself as a performer. It had this sense of a homecoming, a kind of reminder of the spaces and methods I'd like to explore through my work"

"I don't know where to start talking about the workshop, but like you always said "dont think" or don't intellectualize too much.
I would like to share my experience as precise as possible.
To begin with, the workshop has been therapeutic for me and it has initiated a journey within me to the unknown and unexplored routes to the roots of my being.I also discovered my strengths and weaknesses.
During the course of the workshop I revisited the beautiful childhood memories that were stored somewhere little known to me.I also realized the importance of breathing in our lives, this sounds simple but its equally complicated to explain and i cannot articulate it in words."
