I didn’t write that! That was Mike Sanders.
The food editor here is salivating over that story!

Good job, Sam!
My 15 yr old barely eats at all...but I bet she would enjoy the choice option at college! Wish I could afford it! :-)

I thought the headline writers could have done better:
“Food for Thought?”
“Quakers for Quahogs?”
“Where Goes a Parent’s $50k Tuition Check?”
“Gastronomy is a Liberal Art?”
Or, especially for Mikey, wait for it….
“A Cervelle is a Terrible Thing to Waste”
Did I miss my calling?

I can only hazard a guess at the number of brain cells Ben crisped with his
efforts -- and at your (our) age, every one is precious! Yeah, the headline
was crap, I agree.
Seriously, every story I do for the Times should be subtitled: "Death by a
Thousand Cuts." My best line was about students going the extra, low-carbon
mile by eating in the dark every Thursday at Wheaton. An editor joked about
those meals not including beans.
Another quote that did not make it into the piece was from a pr flack at
SUNY Albany, obviously ill-prepared and reading from a hastily cribbed
page, who told me with great pride that they were serving corn-fed organic
beets in their diningroom. Huh?
I was quite happy to see that the story is, right now, the #1 piece in the
whole paper e-mailed to others.
Anyone with food story ideas, let 'er rip. I am currently working on a
piece about urban chicken-keeping, in case anyone out there has heard of
this phenom, particularly the conflict with neighbors (crowing roosters on
city streets) vs. those who just love their birds -- and their eggs. We
currently buy our free-range eggs from a 9-year-old named Sawyer, who has
30 backyard hens and a regular delivery route on his way to elementary
school.
