Good job, Sam!
My 15 yr old barely eats at all...but I bet she would enjoy the choice option at college! Wish I could afford it! :-)

I didn’t write that! That was Mike Sanders.

The food editor here is salivating over that story!

Who knew you were allowed to not like the food?

I remember Kirk Russell’s famous prescription (and I know Steve Coleman will remember too):  “If you don’t like what’s for lunch, there’s always a big ‘ole bowl of peanut butter and jelly right over here [finger pointed]”.   On reflection, I can see how the downstairs staff dining room would make a jumping Pho Café.  Susi – are you in?

I thought the headline writers could have done better:

“Food for Thought?”

“Quakers for Quahogs?”

“Where Goes a Parent’s  $50k Tuition Check?”

“Gastronomy is a Liberal Art?”

Or, especially for Mikey, wait for it….

“A Cervelle is a Terrible Thing to Waste”

Did I miss my calling?

I actually lived on that PB and jelly. I discoverd by not eatting the "mystery meat" at Westttown, that all of my previous stomache problems were due to an intolerance for red meat! So the lack of decent meat in those days, may have "saved " me. PB and jelly , yogurt, and cottage cheese were my staples. YUM! Will the kids eatting gourmet in school grow up to be as "well rounded" as all of us??!!LOL

Stalky, Paul, and others,

I can only hazard a guess at the number of brain cells Ben crisped with his
efforts -- and at your (our) age, every one is precious! Yeah, the headline
was crap, I agree.

Seriously, every story I do for the Times should be subtitled: "Death by a
Thousand Cuts." My best line was about students going the extra, low-carbon
mile by eating in the dark every Thursday at Wheaton. An editor joked about
those meals not including beans.

Another quote that did not make it into the piece was from a pr flack at
SUNY Albany, obviously ill-prepared and reading from a hastily cribbed
page, who told me with great pride that they were serving corn-fed organic
beets in their diningroom. Huh?

I was quite happy to see that the story is, right now, the #1 piece in the
whole paper e-mailed to others.

Anyone with food story ideas, let 'er rip. I am currently working on a
piece about urban chicken-keeping, in case anyone out there has heard of
this phenom, particularly the conflict with neighbors (crowing roosters on
city streets) vs. those who just love their birds -- and their eggs. We
currently buy our free-range eggs from a 9-year-old named Sawyer, who has
30 backyard hens and a regular delivery route on his way to elementary
school.

Heya,
My neighbor Domenica, who arrived in Phila 30 years ago from Abruzzo, used to keep chickens in the basement. Our basement. She had to get rid of them when the neighbors complained. Until fairly recently, you could still see urban chicken coops on project balconies. There are still quite a number of "live kill" joints here in South Philly with hens, rabbits and geese looking wanfully from their tiny cages.

Michael-
Loved the article - so did my niece at Westtown who is shopping for schools.
She has added Bowdoin to the list.
Another idea for a food related article: school food is not just changing at
the collegiate level. Our elementary school has changed to a very 'health
minded' and high brow food provider, offering "Fresh, natural ingredients
that are hormone, nitrate and trans-fat free". Lunches run five to six
bucks. They offer things such as sushi or Caprese sandwiches - for K-fifth
grades. Additionally, sugar is now the new evil in school. Banned by
Schwarzenegger's decree are all cupcakes for birthdays, and even the bake
sale benefits.
Best-
Marnie

I was told that in Philadelphia you are allowed to own one of any
kind of animal, but not two or more-- that would be considered a
"flock" and you would have to apply for some kind of permit or
license or something... apparently it's an old law that's never been
taken off the books, along with the one that says you cannot sew from
your own home and sell what you have made-- this was a law put on the
books back when Philadelphia had a booming textile industry that
didn't want any competition from rugged individualists.
I get my eggs from a farmer who delivers to my porch twice a month,
but I've been wanting chickens and sheep for a long time. Neighbors,
laws ugh. Cornelia.

Mike, I'm really impressed.  I sort of think of the NY Times as the single best product/service ever produced by human kind...reading it is part of my morning ritual that includes a couple of great big cups of Peets coffee and a very quiet, no-one-else awake, household.  So, again, very impressed.  I also love your book about BIW.  Bought several copies for my family years ago as we are big Phippsburg groupies.

Congrats.

Speaking of food...anyone been on a cleanse diet?  One of the my wife's favorite new, new things.

Happy Spring everyone
