Chinese celebration set for Saturday at West Roxbury Branch Library

Chinese New Year is right around the corner and the West Roxbury Chinese Cultural Society and the Boston Latin School Friends of Chinese Culture at Boston Latin School want everyone to celebrate.
For the third year in a row, the two groups are hosting a 2018 Chinese New Year Celebration at the West Roxbury Branch Library, Saturday, Feb. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
From musical performances to food sampling to arts and crafts, organizers hope the event can reach even more people as it becomes an annual tradition. “We found that last year a few different areas got really crowded so we’re moving things around a bit this time,” said organizer Vivica Li. “We want this to become something people come to every year.”
The actual date of Chinese New Year varies annually because it is based on the lunar calendar. It usually falls between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20. This year the new year begins on Friday, Feb. 16 and is the Year of the Dog.
Traditional lion dancing, drumming and singing by residents will be accompanied by artwork from locals. And Li and the other volunteers hope that the event draws both those of Chinese heritage and those without.
“For children with a Chinese background, we want them to continue that tradition in this land and be proud of their roots,” she said. “But we also want to help add cultural diversity into the whole community...we want to celebrate this holiday with everyone.”
For some, the highlight of the event might be the traditional red envelopes given to children. In Chinese culture, the color red symbolizes energy, happiness and good luck. “Lucky money” in these envelopes is a way to send good wishes and happiness to the receivers.
“It’s a tradition to give lucky money to children on the first day of the new year,” Li said. “It offers good fortune for the new year.”
This event will be held at the West Roxbury Branch Library at 1961 Centre St. on Saturday, Feb. 17. For additional information, call the library at 617-325-3147.
