At deregulation in 1986, I.V.L. decided to spread its wings, and to coin the phrase ‘do what it says on the tin’, attempted to Link Valleys where it previously hadn’t operated. One such venture was in Gwent, (Monmouthshire), where it targeted the district known locally as the Eastern Valley, which encompassed Blaenafon in the north to Newport in the south, and was one of National Welsh’s main operating areas.

Services included Pontypool – Newport, Pontypool – Blackwood, Pontypool – Cwmbran, and a town service in Cwmbran and Pontypool.

Here Leyland PSU3E/2R East Lancs B51F 18 (YBO 18T) basks in the sunshine, waiting to return to more familiar territory.

Clarence Street, Pontypool 7/5/88
