Hi Theresa,

I also have a 4 year old female weim named Bella, she doesn't have allergies but I'm a registered dietitian so I tend to always focus on food, can I ask what you're currently feeding Sakya?

Best,

Kelly

Hi all,

I am Therese. I live in Colorado Springs. I have a 4 year old female
named Sakya which is Tibetan for gray earth. She is a handful but also
extremely sweet.

I was wondering if anyone had advice or experience with allergies. She
constantly scratches and works over her paws. The vet has given us
special shampoo with cortisone and various creams and ointments (not
terribly effective because she licks it all off).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hi therese - i had a weim with allergies - we tried food (potato/fish) , allergy desensitization shots, dermatology consult, etc.  she spent most of her life chewing on her feet, lost hair, etc.  the only thing i would say at this point is that if i had to do it over (whoopi has been gone 8 years now - lived to be 16 years) i would have put her on a raw food diet.  that's supposed to really be beneficial to combat allergies.

do you know what her allergies are?  our whoopi was allergic to grass, wool, wheat and some other oddball things.  the allergy desensitization shots didn't work for her but they might for your girl.  i would give them to her subcutaneously (the way insulin is injected).  there are some new allergy foods out now that weren't available for us back in the day.  therese i would really be interested in hearing  how tings go for your sakya.

I have a weim with similar problems. His ears are thick and rough due
to the constant scratching and ear infections. The only allergy that
has been confirmed is beef, so I avoid that but I know there are more.
I think he may also be allergic to grass and pollen as crazy as that
sounds! I have tried all kinds of foods: raw, science diet
hypoallergenic, eukanuba fish/potato and purina one salmon. The food
really doesn't make a difference. My vet said he is "just an allergic
dog" and so he gets oatmeal baths weekly, benadryl daily (5 in the
morning and 5 at night), and I feed him the purina one since I can
give that to all my dogs (I have 3). He also gets an allergy shot from
the vet called Vetalog, which I think is an anti-inflammatory.
Anyways, the only real difference I see is when he doesn't get the
benadryl he flares up, and the shot helps for a week or so. I also try
and keep him inside when the pollen is really bad.

Hope this helps,
Emily

Hi Therese,

Allergies can be such difficult things to pin down and can take a long time to sort out.

It sounds as though it may be just where she walks or runs to only effect her paws. You may try to eliminate that theory by eliminating the places you take her for walks/runs/hikes. For example if you take her to A, B, C, D, E and F places stop taking her to A for say 2 weeks and see if that has a postive effect on her paws. Working your way through all the places you go.

Many years ago I had a boy who always broke out in a skin rash when ever I took him north for shows. The second we got into New South Wales he began to show bumps on his back. Grasses are different in NSW to Victoria and it became very clear there was some sort of grass/weed that just did not agree with him.

As soon as we got home he would be more comfortable within himself and the bumps would be gone by weeks end.

The only other suggestion I would make in terms of bringing her immune system up to optimum is to feed her a species specific diet; that is a prey model diet as near as you can get it.

Dogs like humans, do best when fed what their digestive system was designed for. After all they are carnivores ;-)

Zeta is my very first Weimaraner raised on a totally prey diet and she is a picture of health. She is 4 1/2 years young, has the whitest teeth you have ever seen, no allergies, no 'woofy' smell, no bad breath and her ears have been clean maybe 4 or 5 times in her whole life. The only bath she has had is the one her mother gave her when she gave birth to her; sounds terrible I know but I do not show her so I do not see the need to unset the natural balance of things when it comes to her skin and coat.  Many years ago when I was quiet 'anal' about showing I bathed my dogs before every show, no need these days :-)

September 2008 saw my first totally prey diet raised litter of 11 puppies.

You can see them on YouTube:

More clips of this litter can been seen here:

Swanky is just 6 months young and is my second Wei to be totally raised on a prey diet. No issues of any kind with her either.

Just throwing out some stuff.
Have you ever had her kenneled and if so what happened to her
condition
while she was there? It sounds like it could be things like lawn
chemicals
or weed killers. Some fertilizers like Scott's can have a herbicide in
them.
Some places like golf courses or parks regularily apply pretty toxic
stuff.
It could even be just something that stinks to a weim's nose like
carpet
anti static treatment.

Therese,
What are you feeding her? Some dogs develop food allergies, after they've
matured, and it often manifests as sensitivities in their feet. Very often
the allergy is to corn. Check to see if corn is a major ingredient in her
food. If so, try switching (over a period of a few days)to a food with no
corn products.
Good luck,
Amy

Hello Therese,

How is Sakya getting on?

Have you found anything to ease her allergies?
